After completing my Practical Nurse back in 2009, I wanted to continue and pursue
my RN degree right away but due to few things I needed to consider I wasn’t able to go back to
RN school right away. During that time I needed to work full time in order for me to pay my
bills and to be able to help out my family. After working as a LPN for few years, I came to
realize that it is about time for me to go back to school and pursue what I’ve always wanted to be
which is being a Registered Nurse. There are multiple reasons that prompted me to seek
education from being licensed practical nurse to a professional registered nurse. I personally
believe that pursuing my Associate’s Degree in Nursing will allow me to improve my skills,
abilities and it will help me to expand my knowledge about the other aspects of nursing that I
wasn’t able to learn when I was in Practical Nursing school. As a licensed practical nurse,
opportunities is limited compare to registered nurses. Becoming as registered nurse will help me
leverage my experience and it will give me the opportunity to explore other nursing job
positions. As a current MDS coordinator there are certain task I am not allowed to perform
because it requires a registered nurse to do it. It is really frustrating sometimes because even
though I have the knowledge to perform that certain task, I don’t have the right credential to do
so. Being a mds coordinator, I would like to be able to perform all the task and responsibilities
without any restrictions and the only way for me to attain that is to become a professional
registered nurse.

Nursing school can be very challenging, and for someone like me that have not been in
school for many years requires a lot of adjustment. I do have some fears like others. I am afraid
that I won’t be able to have enough time to study because of the fact that I have to work at the
same time while being in school. Another fear is that I am older now and my brain just doesn’t
work the same like how it used to. I have that fear of failing in my class by not having enough
time to study all the materials I needed to cover. These are the fears I am feeling starting in the
nursing program.

Given the fact that I have to work full time while in the nursing school is one thing
that may affect my academic performance. And as a married person I have responsibilities with
my family as well. There are a lot of things that I need to consider such as making sure I also
have time with my family. These are the barriers that I may have to overcome while in the
nursing program in order for my academic performance not to be affected.

Even though I may have some fears and barriers through the process of seeking my
education as a professional registered nurse I am staying positive. I do believe that as long as I
have good time management, good system in studying and I stay organized I will be able to
achieved my goal. Dedication, determination and willingness to sacrifice is the key for me to be
successful in this nursing program.
As a nurse, I have some short and long term goals. My short term goals after
graduating from the program is to be able to pass my NCLEX – RN exam, to excel as mds
coordinator. I would like to obtain my restorative certification and eventually enroll to a BSN
program in order for me to achieve a higher level of clinical expertise. Some of my long term
goals is to enroll in masters’ degree program in nursing management that will provide me with
more opportunity and I will eventually work on seeking position as a nurse leader or MDS
consultant position.
