Homework Assignment 2.1
1. What are the major types of movements the Earth makes?
There are two types of major movements of the earth. Earth’s Rotation and Earth’s
Revolution. Earth’s rotation is the rotation of the planet Earth around its own axis.
Earth’s Revolution means change. Earth’s Revolution means that there is change that is
happening from day and night and seasons.
2. What is the imaginary sphere that surrounds the Earth on which the constellations appear
to be placed?
The imaginary sphere that surrounds the Earth on which the constellations appear
to be placed is named the celestial sphere. The celestial sphere marks the north and south
celestial poles.
3. How many constellations do we recognize today?
There are many constellations, However, we recognize five constellations which are
visible to the eye, these five constellations we recognize can be seen all year while the
others will appear seasonally.
4. Does the Moon have any light of its own? If not, where does it get its light?
No, the Moon does not have any light of its own as the Moon gets its light from the
Sun as the Moon reflects the Sun’s light making it look and shine brightly in the
night sky.
5. What is the time of day a full Moon would rise? When would it set? (Not looking for
precise time, but relative to the Sun.)
The time of day a full Moon would rise is when the Moon and Sun are in different and
separate positions in the sky. Therefore, a full Moon would rise about the same time equal
to sunset and set about the same time equal to the time of sunrise for most places on Earth.
6. As seen by an observer on Earth, do the stars appear to move over the course of an
evening? Why?
Finley|2
Yes, stars appear to move over the course of an evening as seen by an observer on
earth because stars move in circles around the Celestial sphere and can also depend
on the observer’s location of latitude on earth.
7. True or false: When we have our summer season, the Earth is nearer to the Sun.
FALSE
8. True or false: When we have winter, the Earth is further from the Sun.
FALSE
9. During the course of the year, there are two equinoxes and two solstices. What is the
difference between an equinox and a solstice?
During the course of the year, there are two equinoxes which are the fall and spring
equinoxes. These two Equinoxes happen only twice a year, while the two solstices
which include summer and winter solstices happen once every six months.
10. When the Moon lies directly on the line between the Sun and the Earth, we have what
kind of eclipse? What would an observer on Earth see?
When the Moon lies directly on the line between the Sun and the Earth, we have a
lunar shadow that is seen as a solar eclipse on Earth. An observer on Earth would
see that the moon covers 100 percent of the sun and will experience complete
darkness depending on the observer’s location here on Earth.
