Essay #2: Process Analysis
How to Make or How to Do Something
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to write about a process that you have done or are doing or want to
be doing.
Method: We will be peer reviewing this essay, so you will be bringing to class a complete draft. During
class time, we will have a Peer Editing and revision workshop. You will be receiving and giving draft
comments with your classmates. Then, the final draft will be due after that.
Format: You should organize your when you explain how to a process. The structure will most likely be
linear, and make start before the process, then during, and then afterwards. As with all of our essay, it
should have a clear thesis and formal structure. (We will review essay structure again and organization in
class.)
Information and Analysis: You will be telling the reader both how to do the process and what you think
about it as you move along in the essay.
Content: As will Essay #1, you have the freedom to create your own content within this assignment. The
tone of the essay may be serious, or funny, or combinations of emotion, analysis, and reflection. You may
write about something practical like “How to Fix a Flat Tire,” to something with deeper meaning such as
“How to Juggle Work and School,” or “How to Be a Supportive Friend.” Please remember to write in
complete sentences, even if you are working with a topic about food and recipes. (We will talk about this
more in class.)
Grade: This assignment is worth 20% of your overall grade. It will be graded for the clarity of the writing
as well as the nature of the content. The grade will be pass or no pass. If you do not pass the essay, you
will be asked to rewrite it.
Length: Again, we will be emphasizing quality over quantity, so the page length will be two pages or 500
words. You can always write more than that, but you do need to write to the minimum.
Format: We will review again the format in class, but it will be basic MLA format.
Process: If you have questions about the assignment, we can go over those together at any stage of the
process. We will also be reviewing some mechanics of punctuation and grammar as well.
Note: You are encouraged to be incorporating the types of punctuation and grammar that we have just
practiced together.
