My Name is Margret
There are ways used to enrich writing that includes metaphors, direct quotes or just
creating an impressive flow of ideas. In Angelou story, the text informs us that white employer,
Mrs. Culligan, does not see black employees, Margaret, and Miss Glory, as her social equals.
Margaret admires Mrs. Culligan glassware in its cabinet and states, “There were goblets,
Sherbets glasses, ice cream glasses, wire glasses, green coffee cups with matching saucers and
water glasses. I had a glass to drink from, and it sat with Miss Glory’s on a separate shelf from
others.” (172). the glassware symbolizes difference in social status between the employer and the
employee.
The employer Mrs. Culligan believes that there ought to be a real difference between her
and the employees. It is correct to imagine that the glasses have been used metaphorically to
represent intentional discrimination. The glasses are all in the same cabinet; however, the
employees who are black, have their glasses separated from the rest. Mrs. Culligan wants us to
believe that she belongs to a distinctly separate social status and has nothing in common with the
black employees, Margaret, and Miss Glory.
It is though not clear whether the difference emanates from the color difference (racial) or
social status. With concern to racial disparity, it is evident Mrs. Culligan does not want to share

any glasses with black workers. The glasses have been used to express separateness with nothing
uniting. The strict placement of employees’ glasses in a separate, distinct area demonstrates that
Mrs. Culligan is motivated to keep the social distance with her employees Margaret and Miss
Glory. The employee and employer are different.
In summary, the metaphorical use of glasses exposes prejudices that society still hold
practiced openly but hashed from discussions. From the quote, “There were goblets, Sherbets
glasses, ice cream glasses, wire glasses, green coffee cups with matching saucers and water
glasses. I had a glass to drink from, and it sat with Miss Glory’s on a separate shelf from
others.” (172). The glassware symbolizes difference in social status between the employer and
the employee. The employer has separated herself socially and physically through her actions.
