The “George Washington” of Latin America, Simon Bolivar,
was at the center of the
Readen
revolutions in South America that gained independence for his people from Spain. But, he was
also an educated aristocrat schooled in Spain and supportive of the ideas of the European
Enlightenment. In particular he was much influenced by Montesquieu’s ideas on the
“uniqueness of cultures”. What was that theory, what are some of the qualities to be considered
within it and what did Bolivar believe Latin Americans should learn from the creation of the
United States?

Among those who greatly influenced the founding of the US, Paine was different than most
others in a number of ways. From your reading discuss two characteristics of Paine that put him
at variance from most of his contemporaries.
