I do not believe it as easy as saying “the south won reconstruction” as it
was not a conflict that has a winning or losing side. The South did
effectively resist change, although slavery was abolished, servitude was not
much different and many southerners did not respect the rules of the
North. Slavery was abolished but white supremacy reigned in the South still
with groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. I do believe the military was
effectively used in the reconstruction period as they were important in
keeping control in a difficult rebuild. The military was tasked with
controlling labor strikes that could get out of hand if not apprehended, as it
was a difficult time for many with the war ending and good jobs in a
