A response paper for Japanese cinema class The assignment for the response paper is to watch Kurosawa’s Rashōmon (available streaming online on YouTube) and write about the narrative perspectives and points of view (POV) in the film and their functions, effects and significance to the individual stories of the Woodcutter, Monk, Samurai and Wife being both told and shown/”pictured”. The positioning, viewpoints and perspectives of the camera, in other words, are implicitly those of the director/narrator and the audience. For the most part, they are not character POVs, but provide more independent, objective perspectives on the subjective experiences being related verbally by the four main protagonists and visualized cinematically by the director, who is serving as the “master storyteller.” Is Kurosawa, through his camerawork and other filmic techniques (e.g., usage of sound tracks) giving us clues regarding the truthfulness/falsity of the individual accounts being told and shown? These responses are informal essays in which you express your own personal thoughts and answers to specificqueries. When writing these short response essays, do not use or refer to any secondarysources except for those specifically assigned for the course.
