D. Choose a work of art from the image collection that you enjoyed. You will
need to provide the information of the art work as you must for section C.
Discuss and describe the work’s effects on you. Consider the following in
your response:

added to your appreciation of the art?
ii. Did understanding the elements and principles of design
increase your enjoyment of the work?
iii. Did you connect with the work of art through an emotional
response?
*Note – All explanations for the concepts associated with the terms and
stylistic characteristics associated with the artistic movements must be put
in your own words. Copied definitions or phrases from any source (this
includes the textbook) will be treated as plagiarism which will result in a 0
for the entire assignment. SafeAssign will be used.
Here is an example of the type of response I am looking for on terminology:
Let’s pretend the required period related style is Byzantine. Below is my
selected image to demonstrate the concepts associated with this period:
Note – you are not required to provide images. This is only for
demonstration purposes.
My entry related to Byzantine art will look like this:
Byzantine – Provide your explanation of the characteristics associated with
the Byzantine style:
Byzantine artists make no attempts to create the illusion of believable space
within their imagery. This can be noted in two ways – first, figures generally
occupy a generic setting with no visual information to identify a specific
location; second, the only visual element of art used to convey space is
overlapping. Figures are commonly all placed in the foreground and they are
not positioned to even correspond to an existing ground. Another
characteristic of Byzantine art can be noted in the representation of the
human form; the figures are not modeled to create the illusion of a rounded,
volumetric form, instead they appear flat. The artists make no reference to
the body beyond the heads, hands and feet. The garments worn by figures
make no reference to the human form beneath them. Lastly, the approach
to facial features is to create a depiction that is dominated by heavily
outlined eyes, which are often sized a bit too large in proportion to the other
facial features.
You will also need to provide the information related to your selected work of
art:
Byzantine – Provide the following information for the work of art you are
using to demonstrate Byzantine art:
Artist’s Name: Unknown
Title of art work: Presentation Scene: Theodore Metochites presenting the
Monastery of Christ in Chora to Christ.
Date of art work: 12th century
Medium(s) used for work of art: mosaic
Byzantine – Provide your description that relates how the concepts
associated with the Byzantine style appear in your selected work of art:
In the Presentation Scene with Theodore Metochites the Byzantine stylistic
characteristics are readily identified. First, Theodore Metochites and Jesus
are placed in an ambiguous setting; while Jesus is seated on a throne, which
does make reference to furniture, the area that the figures inhabit is simply
covered with gold and some text. There is no imagery to reference a specific
room, or place. Both figures are placed in the foreground. While the throne
Jesus sits on is placed slightly higher in the image so we read the image as
Theodore kneeling at the feet of Jesus, the space is still very shallow.
Additionally, the model of the monastery held in the hands of Theodore
overlaps a portion of the throne so we perceive Theodore as slightly closer.
While Theodore appears to kneel firmly on the ground as he is presented in
a profile view, the support that Jesus places his feet upon is tilted forward
allowing us to view the entire top of his feet. This is also evidence of the
Byzantine indifference to depicting their figures in believable settings. The
bodies of both figures are not modeled and appear flat; this is most visible in
the depiction of Theodore, which relies heavily on the use of outline. Lastly,
the emphasis placed upon the eyes of Byzantine figures is most visible in the
depiction of Jesus; they are heavily outlined and occupy a disproportionate
amount of space in regards to the width of the head.
A few things you need to take away from this demonstration: I stick
specifically to referencing the visuals, focusing not on the subject matter to
demonstrate the characteristics of the Byzantine style, but rather on those
aspects that are particular to the way the artists depicted them. The other
thing you should notice is that I have provided several specific
characteristics associated with this style in my explanation and in my
description as to how they appear in my selected work of art. Make sure you
do the same.
