BCJ2002 Columbia Southern University Prisons and Justice System Discussion Discussion Board Questions Unit IV BCJ 2002 This is what my classmate wrote and I have to comment: Overcrowding in prisons seem to be the biggest factor when talking about the large number of gangs in prisons. Overcrowding often creates budget restraints and high inmate to correctional staff numbers. This double edged sword expands prison gang population for 2 reason. Number 1, the most dangerous criminals see the opportunity to form gangs and flourish with offering protection that security personnel cannot guarantee, on the flip side, because inmates are less likely to receive proper security, they willingly join these gangs (if not already a member) to guarantee their own personal safety. Many dangerous criminals packed into a confined space cannot have positive results. Don’t get me wrong. I do not have a better solution. I just see no upside to packing monsters together. UNIT V board question BCJ 2002 Top of Form Many have argued that a prison is an unsuitable place for criminals who may have mental health issues. What do you think? Should mentally ill offenders be incarcerated in prisons and jails? Why, or why not?
