Benefits of IPv6 Layer 3 addressing is needed for Internet access. Although IPv4 addresses have been exhausted, many organizations still run the 4 octet, 32-bit IPv4 protocol. Network Address Translation (NAT) as well as Private IPv4 Addressing have delayed the full implementation of IPv6. With that said, most organizations are beginning to run “dual-stack” layer 3 platforms in which both IPv4 and IPv6 run simultaneously on a network. Therefore, IPv4 will not disappear any time soon; however, the continued need for more IP address assignments (i.e. Internet of Things) will require more address space. That is where IPv6 comes in. For this week’s discussion, compare and contrast IPv4 to IPv6. In addition, to more addressing space, what are the benefits of IPv6 as compared to IPv4?
