Unit VIII Announcement
Having looked closely at biases (in Unit VII) we now move on to apply critical thinking to a couple of other areas and also look at bad thinking (the fallacies or dirty tricks). In
chapter 13 we look at how people can use bad thinking to justify their beliefs and even their behavior. Looking at these “Dirty Tricks” will give us an idea of what kind of
thinking should be avoided. By now it should be clear to you that critical thinking has many applications. We can apply critical thinking to social problems, political problems
and even ethics. When we apply critical thinking to ethics we must think about issues like what makes something morally right versus morally wrong? Given that there are
gray areas, what is morally wrong versus morally right is not always clear. There is one gauge that is very helpful: do my actions and decisions cause harm to others? If the
answer to this question is yes, then chances are that those actions and decisions will be morally wrong. Since causing harm to others is morally wrong, we must be careful
that we do not intentionally or unintentionally cause harm.
