The Obama Presidency
The topic that has been chosen is the Obama Presidency. Perhaps, because of the current
chaos, the longest government shutdown in the US history and the ugly side of American politics
becoming evident, there has been a lot of questions asked on how President Obama could have
had an indirect role in the mess that is now the American democracy. In a country built on
slavery and oppression of the African-Americans, President Obama became the first AfricanAmerican president, and also one to be born outside continental US, since he traces his birth in
Hawaii. He is also a president who rose to power at a time when there was disillusionment
following the 2008 economic recession, and rode in a wave of hope. President Obama was seen
as a restoration, a person who could usher the nation into an era of racial tolerance and increased
improvement for the minorities (Teasley & Ikard, 2017), especially the African-Americans who
voted one man to ensure that he became the US president.
However, historians contend that it was under his watch that a new generation of
politicians came up in the US. These politicians would end up joining the White House, with
President Trump at the helm. It has been said that President Obama was gullible to the
foundation of the American democracy, despite evidence on the contrary. Out of this
indifference, President Obama refused to take stern action as these politicians started to take
hardline positions on issues such as immigration, and the public started feeding its rhetoric
(Anestaki et al., 2019). Therefore, this topic will try and link three aspects; pre-Obama
presidency, Obama presidency and the aftermath of his actions and inactions. Perhaps, with the
necessary sobriety, one can look at how divergence and how facts were thrown out of the
national politics, and yelling and privileged screaming and attacks became a norm. Today, one
agrees that America needs to rethink its political discourse, and its democracy altogether.
