Step 1:

Review the video: The Hidden Value of Routine Activities

Choose one (1) of the children to focus on for your observation. identify the child you observed by gender, appropriate age, objective identifier (such as the child wearing a blue shirt). and an assumed name.

Step 2:

Document your observations of the child using at least eight (8) objective statements about her/his development and/or behavior. Be sure to create factual statements as opposed to subjective interpretations.

Example:

Objective Statement: The child jumped up and down when he mother entered the room.

Interpretation: The child was excited to see his mother.

Step 3:

Include one (1) paragraph reflecting on the setting/environment, interactions with other children present, adult engagement, and the role/value of the materials used.

Step 4:

Choose two (2) pieces of relevant information gained from this observation regarding the child’s needs, strengths, and interests. Then, create a separate, professional quality communication document to share your findings with the child’s family’s, as you would do during a Parent-Teacher Conference. This document should be addressed to the family and thoroughly explain.
