M250/HIM2942 Rasmussen SEC1 Module 1 AHIMA Career MAP Discussion Paper For this discussion, summarize a position related to coding you might be interested in from the AHIMA Career Map or other job board. Explain why you are interested in this position. Now the instructor has asked for a revision; For the initial discussion post the requirement is a paper in the APA format at least 3 pages double spaced with approximately 300 words. Make sure you proof your work and cite where you found the material. I have attached what I initially turned in, if you couple please add to it to make it a longer and better assignment, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Health Information Technician is a position that is related to coding, the reason I became interested in
this career was because it was a job that I applied for and got. It paid a lot more than the profession of a
Medical Assistant that I graduated with from Rasmussen last year, hence my career change at age 47.
I (prep) prepare medical record documents of patients for scanning in various settings (acute care,
ambulatory, urgent care). I scan paper documents into an electronic system to ensure accuracy and
timeliness. I review each document to ensure that the patient name, medical record number, account
number, form type and other applicable information is correct. I process documents so that they upload
to the electronic health record. Then we go through a process of what we call QC and validating that
review the records for completion based on applicable regulations (accreditation agencies, CMS, or
state). By doing all of these procedures I release medical records with valid authorization in conjunction
with HIPAA and state regulations.
My other responsibilities that I perform involve a variety of activities like the reporting of deaths and
falls for the state of Tennessee in our 13 Saint Thomas facilities. It all very interesting work and plenty
room for advancement in the revenue cycle of medical billing and coding.
Thorough knowledge of legal medical record requirements I’ve learned to use equipment such as bar
code scanners, printers, fax machine, photocopier and scanner and I’ve also developed strong computer
skills. I’ve learned patience to deal professionally with co-workers and staff from other departments and
vendors as needed. This job will make you focus on important details, and to be able to multi-task in a
fast-paced environment is a must.
