In Lane-Poole’s, The Moors of Spain, it seems that he has an obvious
fascination and idealization of Moors, specifically European Moors.
Throughout the book, Lane-Poole lets the readers know that he believes
that the Moors have come up with all of the inventions and culturally
significant that we typically associate with other areas and people, “Art,
literature, and science prospered as they then prospered nowhere else in
Europe.”(Lane-Poole Preface). Since this book was written in the 1880’s,
and Lane-Poole was a British scholar of the Orient, there is still a clear
almost fixation of the European Moors that Lane-Poole rather than the
non-European Moors. Lastly, Lane-Poole represents the Moors in a way that
lessens those who he describes as Moors down to only those that were
European, diminishing the those that came from other areas.
