Marketing Assignment 1 SWOT analysis Your submission should be no more than one page (1″ margins, single-spaced and 12 point font) uploaded on Blackboard in Word format. You do not need to include your name and UIN on the assignment since we will grade them directly in Blackboard. Also, you should not include separate works cited page but include hyperlinks to your sources for each identified factor.
Your analysis needs to be presented in a bullet-point format with the following outline:
Introduction – What is the company and why do you think it is interesting?
Strengths – you should identify at least three strengths of the company. For each you would write a statement in the following format: A strength of the company is….. I base this assessment on “source”
Weakness – you only need to identify one weakness of the company. You would write a statement in the following format: A weakness of the company is….. I base this assessment on “source”)
Opportunities – you need to identify at least three opportunities. For each you would write a statement in the following format: An opportunity in the company’s external environment is ….. I base this assessment on “source.” Keep in mind that in a SWOT analysis, an opportunity is a “favorable factor in the external environment, not what the company could do. You should focus on describing the trend or phenomenon in the environment that you think is favorable, not at this point discuss what the company could do about it.
Threats – you need to identify at least three threats. For each you would write a statement in the following format: A threat from the company’s external environment is ….. I base this assessment on “source.”
Conclusion – Provide two recommendations based on your analysis. Examples: Company X can take advantage of Trend Y in the external environment, by … (e.g., launching new products, using new ways to communicate with its customers, increasing its service offerings). Your recommendations can be linked to any of the SWOT factors you have identified.
For this assignment, you will conduct a brief SWOT analysis for a publicly traded company of your choice (except the following companies: Netflix (which we cover in class), Pepsi, Amazon.com, Apple, Starbucks, and Nike (these companies have been analyzed by many students in recent semesters).
The following sources are not acceptable: Wikipedia, blog posts and any other user-generated information site, and published SWOT analyses for the company from any source.
Use the example below!! Marketing Assignment 1: SWOT analysis
Introduction:
I chose to research PepsiCo for my SWOT analysis. I have been interning at The Quaker
Oats Company for the past two years, which is part of PepsiCo, and thought it would be
interesting to do an analysis on a company that I am directly related to.
Strengths
• A strength of PepsiCo is that it has a strong brand name. I base this assessment on its
existence on the Forbes list of most valued brands and its ranking of #44 in the Fortune 500.
• A strength of PepsiCo is that has strong brands in a variety of food product categories. It not
only sells soft drinks, but also cereal, salty snacks, juices and other products. I base this
assessment on the list of Pepsi brands and products found on their website.
• A strength of PepsiCo is its global presence. I base this assessment on Hoover’s company
description of PepsiCo which states that the company is established in over 200 countries
world wide.
Weaknesses
• A weakness of PepsiCo is that it that although it is present in various countries, it heavily
relies on domestic sales. I base this assessment on the Hoover’s company description of Pepsi
which states that 50% of its sales is generated in the U.S.
Opportunities
• An opportunity in the company’s external environment is the growing demand for bottled
water. I base this assessment on a Passport GMID article.
• An opportunity in the company’s external environment is the increasing population and
buying power of the Hispanic community. I base this assessment on the Mintel analysis of
Hispanic consumers and their snacking preferences,
• An opportunity in the company’s external environment is the growing demand for nutritional
and performance drinks. I base this assessment on Mintel’s forecast of the growing market.
Threats
• A threat in the company’s external environment is a change in consumer food preferences
towards healthier foods, and a declining demand for salty and sugary food. I base this
assessment on a Mintel Article.
• A threat in the company’s external environment is strong competition from other global
beverage and food companies, particularly Coca-Cola and Mondelez. I base this assessment
on Hoover’s description of these companies.
• A threat in the company’s external environment is changing government regulations, in
particular potential laws and taxes to regulate the amount of sugar and salt in foods. I base
this assessment on a Passport GMID article.
Conclusion
• PepsiCo can take advantage of the increasing popularity of nutritional foods by creating
healthier foods and drinks with less sugar and salt content under its existing brands like
Quaker, Gatorade, and Naked.
• PepsiCo can take advantage of the growing Hispanic market by creating snacks that appeal to
their preferences and by directly marketing those products to the Hispanic community.
