Purpose: The purpose of this writing assignment is to analyze the portrayal of Native Americans
in some aspect of current American popular culture or contemporary media. You can choose
from, but are not limited to, the following media:

Native American characters (whether or not they are played by Native American actors)
in a movie or television show
Native Americans portrayed in advertising in any medium (print, online, television)
Native American perspectives and voices in the news media concerning current issues
(sports mascots, walleye fishing, wild rice harvesting, DAPL)
Your goal is to examine the way in which Native Americans are portrayed to larger culture, the
images it creates for the viewer, and/or the ways in which Native voices are heard/kept silent. It
is important that you use popular media sources to gain a better understanding of the controlling
message. Additionally, your example should look at a current portrayal, no more than 5 years
old. If you are unsure if a topic is appropriate, please ask.
In this assignment you should create a link between your subject (Native Americans) and popular
media. Your examination of the link between these two topics should lead your reader to a better
understanding of how American culture is shaping an external Native American identity. For this
essay you should do the following:

Center your essay on a question you want to answer about this topic. For example, why
are Native Americans largely absent from television? This question later becomes your
thesis.
Keep your essay organized by ensuring all your evidence works to answer your question.
Use concrete, specific examples to prove your point. If you are analyzing a movie, cite
specific scenes, dialogue, or actions that prove the point you are making.
Your essay must be accurately and appropriately cited using MLA documentation style.
Length: Your media analysis must be 900-1200 words in length, excluding the works cited page.
Research: You do not need to include research other than the media you are analyzing, but you
may choose to include up to two sources if desired. All sources must be cited, including your
primary source (movie, TV show, etc.), with both in-text citations and a works cited page.
Due date: This essay must be uploaded to D2LBrightspace no later than 11:59 pm on Sunday,
Mar. 3.
Point value: The media analysis is worth 150 points of your total grade
