Write a paragraph (five to ten sentences each) of summary of EACH of the two essays:

ONLY summarize the material and do NOT give a personal opinion or express
agreement or disagreement. That will come later in your paragraph at the end.

In the opening sentence of each summary paragraph, indicate the author and title of the
essay and indicate the MAIN POINT of the essay: what that writer is trying to prove,
essentially, that writer’s thesis or main observation. This is required and MUST be in the
opening sentence. Do NOT use the phrase “talks about” since that is vague and does not
convey a main idea.

In the body of the paragraph (at least three sentences), summarize the essay by
identifying its main points. Include at least one BRIEF quotation, preferably introduced
with a running acknowledgement (aka running attribution) using the author’s last name.
After the quote you will have to include the page number in a parenthetical/internal
citation. For the closing sentence, make a final observation concerning the “whole” effect
of the essay.

Open by identifying the author’s main idea. Make strong, clear statements.
▪
Include (on a new page–insert, break, page break) a paragraph of personal response (five
to ten sentences).
o For the personal response paragraph, you will need to make a personal
observation/response to each essay, indicating if you agree or disagree and WHY.
If you think the author’s argument is flawed or the author is not doing a good job,
explain why. If you agree, explain why. This paragraph needs to be at least five
sentences long.
