Describe the controversial topic you have chosen: racial profiling
Racial profiling refers to the act of targeting or suspecting a person or group of persons of certain race
based on observation, behavior or assumption of a racial, rather than on the person suspicion.
Which viewpoint will you champion: racial profiling in our police system
Racial profiling in our police system is unfair and it does not endorse the virtue of fairness and just in the
U.S law and it alienates the people from the law enforcement.
What is the opposing viewpoint:
Racial profiling is beneficial to the law enforcement through focusing on a particular target thus narrowing
the criminal targets instead of focusing more criminals who may prolong the case.

Racial profiling has created and perpetuated a wide range of social problems that involve
relations between the races in the United States of America, since it alienates the community
from law enforcement, and this hindering community policing efforts
How will you connect with the audience?
Connect with the audience is allows one to understand the audience’s reactions to the topic,
whether there are understanding or not. There are various ways I would connect with the
audience; have the audiences best interest, make eye contact, using of simple words, being
dressing appropriately and address my topic from the audiences perspectives.
Transition statement:
Profiling individuals based on their ethical or race background is ineffective and poor method of
evaluating the intentions of people to commit a crime.

Main point #1: I will analyze three social perspectives regarding racial profiling
a. Subpoint one: I will expand on how each perspectives offer a variety of explanations on
social issues and how it is related to racial profiling.
b. Subpoint two: the history of racial profiling dating back to the reconstruction of the south
Supporting evidence for main point #1:
Law enforcement and private police will often target the Blacks for humiliation where they are
frightened through detentions, searches with no proof of any criminal activity
Transition statement:
The law enforcement police officer should strive to establish a better relationship with each race
to create respect, instead of relying too much on racial profiling
Main point #2: functionalist perspective concerning racial profiling.
a. Subpoint one: this functionalist perspective theory views the society as an
interconnected and complex systems where very part of the society work together as a
whole.
b. Subpoint two: this theory focuses how each social structure such as family, school,
economy and the society as whole contributed to the rise of this problem racial
profiling towards particular race.
Supporting evidence for main point #1:
According to functionalist perspective, racial profiling has created wide range of social
issue that affects the relationship between different race as well has created a feeling of
victimization and powerlessness.
Transition statement:
This profiling creates a perception of been a haunted race and the victims has take it as part of
their life and thus avoid constant suspicion.
Main point #3: Conflict perspective
a. Subpoint one: this perspective views the society as made up of different social parts
working together.
b. Subpoint two: racial profiling by the police has resulted in people living in fear since
every person becomes suspects just because they are of the same race, their
originality, come from a different religion.
Supporting evidence for main point #1:
The theory examine how various aspects the society by viewing which group had more power to
result to the social issue; for example, the law enforcement are supposed to protect people from
crime and ensure justice and fairness in the society.
Transition statement:
America is a democratic country, racial profiling affects the integrity, and justice and fairness of
the American law since its citizens are not equally treated.
Main point #4: Symbolic internationalist perspective
a. Subpoint one: this theory show how Society and human behavior influence the coloration
with others despite the race. Failure of the society leads to chaos and increase in crime.
b. Subpoint two: shows how parents fail to nature their children properly since they are “always
caught up with jobs” the number of young people indulging in drugs increases.
Supporting evidence for main point #1:
The theory portrays how to avoid such cases of crime are not race issues but it’s about how people bring
up their children.
Transition statement:
Despite having the probability of certain race committing crimes, this does not necessary imply
that the individuals from that particular race are criminal.
CONCLUSION
Racial profiling has exposed most people to scrutiny based on their racial or ethnic
background rather than having a reasonable suspicion. This type of racial profiling has created
and perpetuated a wide range of social problems that involve relations between various races in
the United States. The police officer should strive to establish a better relationship better various
race to create respect and trust between them. This is because the use of racial profiling in
curbing criminal activities is a poor method of evaluating the intentions of people to commit a
crime, thus does not uphold the virtue of fairness and just in the United States.
