1. Analyze the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S.
Constitution. Explain the significance of these founding documents and how they altered the
concept of government that had prevailed in society before their creation.
1. Analyze the Declaration of Independence,
a. The Declaration of Independence establishes the values of the United States of
America. It says that “all men are created equal” and have the right to “life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Further, it states the purpose of government
is to protect these values.
2. Articles of Confederation
a. The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central
government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. The need for
a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the
Constitutional Convention in 1787.
3. U.S. Constitution
a. The Constitution has three main functions.
i. First it creates a national government consisting of a legislative, an
executive, and a judicial branch, with a system of checks and balances
among the three branches.
b. Second, it divides power between the federal government and the states

a. What does it mean to be a part of “We the People”?
i. “We the People” is a phrase that comes from the Preamble of the
United States Constitution. In the Preamble of the United States, it
talks about what the purpose of the Constitution, and what
principles guide it.
b. What rights do “We the People” have
a. First Amendment. Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of
grievances.
c. where do those rights come from?
a. three foundational principles of our Constitutional Republic:
i. Our rights are unalienable and come from God.
ii. The purpose of Civil Government is to protect our God-given
rights.
iii. Civil government is legitimate only when it operates with our
consent.
iv. The U.S. Constitution is the formal expression of our consent.
3. How has the term “American” changed from the founding of the nation through today?
