How can someone make love without love?: Sharon Olds, “Sex without Love”.
In this poem, the poet makes the reader think about the negative aspects of having sex without
love. Olds poses the topic seriously right at the beginning of the poem and then tries to explain it with
ironic phrases. By beautiful example of ice-skating, Olds simulates the partners as ice-skaters over the ice.
This example tries to illustrate the contrast of what we see and what that happens in the life of people
making love without love. What we see is the beautiful scenes of ice-skating and the ice-skaters dancing
and moving on the ice, which is wonderful. But the reality is the ice and frozen atmosphere between the
ice-skaters who are the people involved in making love without love. They dance and move while their
heart is frozen and there is no warmth because of lacking love and passion.
The next result of having sex without love is having unwanted children. Olds is concerned about
giving birth to children who are not invited to the world with love; those who are unwanted and their
parents might give them away one day. This seems to be an awful outcome of sex without love. When a
couple is in love, they raise their children with passion and they care about each other and their children.
But an unexpected child is unlikely to be raised with love.
The poet even goes further and mentions that this is not accepted by God. Neither any religions,
nor God accepts this way of living and it its results. Sex without marriage is prohibited by religions. Later
on, Sharon Olds brings a new example. She simulates the one having sex without love to a runner. She
believes the runners are alone along the way against all difficulties, such as cold and wind. Besides, Olds

mentions the physical side of such relationship. Although one’s body is not alone, they physically feel
lonely. Olds believes that sex without love is artificial.
At the end, Olds comes to a conclusion, “Just factors, like the partner in the bed, and not the truth,
which is the single body alone in the universe against its own best time.”(4)
The poet concludes that sex without love is nothing but mentally and physically loneliness and it
definitely fails.
Sex Without Love by Sharon Olds
How do they do it, the ones who make love
without love? Beautiful as dancers,
gliding over each other like ice-skaters
over the ice, fingers hooked
inside each other’s bodies, faces
red as steak, wine, wet as the
children at birth whose mothers are going to
give them away. How do they come to the
come to the come to the God come to the
still waters, and not love
the one who came there with them, light
rising slowly as steam off their joined
skin? These are the true religious,
the purists, the pros, the ones who will not
accept a false Messiah, love the
priest instead of the God. They do not
mistake the lover for their own pleasure,
they are like great runners: they know they are alone
with the road surface, the cold, the wind,
the fit of their shoes, their over-all cardiovascular health–just factors, like the partner
in the bed, and not the truth, which is the
single body alone in the universe
against its own best time.
