Research Question: Does evidence support that child abuse later effects an adults mental state?
I.
Introduction
A. Child abuse is one of the most devastating events that are capable of having farreaching and long-term effects in the victims.
B. Thesis statement: The pain and trauma, which are caused by child abuse, do not easily
leave the victims even in adulthood, and that is will adversely affect various aspects
of their lives.
II.
Body Paragraph: The past memories of childhood abuse do not leave the victims even
in their adulthood
A. Regarding child abuse, the past is not always the past. Factually, it is not the past
since it lives with the victims, becoming manifest in adulthood.
1. Individuals who suffered from child abuse would even in adulthood hate to be in
presence of strangers or people in whom they do not have confidence (Beach et
al., 2011).
2. A parent who experienced child abuse would always be cautious if her child gets
exceedingly close to her teacher.
B. When the scars or evidence of abuse do not heal, the victims will continually look at
the scars and that will always remind them of the ordeal.

1. A child was physically abused with her parents or one who was physically hurt by
strangers in the absence of her parents will always see the marks of the abuse and
that will lead to a devastating torment.
C. The fact that adults will always remember the abuses that they went through when
they were young is evidence that child abuse has effects not only in the childhood but
also in adulthood.
III. Body Paragraph: Adults who experienced child abuse have low self-esteem.
A. Low self-esteem among adults who experienced self-esteem is brought by lack of
personal confidence and the tendency to be lonely (Hornor, 2010)
B. For example, a woman who was molested when she was a child may not be capable
of getting involved and enjoying a sexual activity since she would always be thinking
about the ordeal, and that may affect her self-esteem.
C. When a young girl is molested, she may live thinking that sex is something that is
painful, forceful and a sign of exploitation and that may hinder her from having a
successful sexual experience in the future
IV. Body Paragraph: Child abuse may lead to social isolation.
A. A child who experiences a life threatening form of child abuse may not be able to
make friends in future, leading to isolation (McCann & Pearlman, 2015)
B. For instance, if a child is left in the care of a cruel nanny who usually assaults her, the
child will grow up in fear of people and that will affect her social interactions

C. The memory of suffering in the hands of stranger live with children and that is
capable of negatively impacting their perception, preventing them from making
friends in adulthood.
V.
Body Paragraph: Adults who experienced child abuse are prone to chronic low level
depression
A. Stress that comes with childhood abuse is capable of having a tremendous impact on
the hormonal balance of the children and that will grow with them into adulthood,
leading to chronic depression (Johnson-Reid et al., 2012)
B. Depression is in most cases caused by the body’s reaction to stress. When somebody
is stressed, as is common among victims of abuse, the body’s chemical balance is
affected and that will led to depression in adulthood.
C. The stress, which accompanies child abuse stays with the victims even in adulthood
since the thought of the abuse, does not usually go away, leading to the chronic
depression.
VI. Body Paragraph: Victims of child abuse especially sexual abuse experience conflicted
marriage
A. Sexual abuse has a long lasting impact on a child’s idea of sex. The child will in the
future fail to appreciate the beauty of sex and that will in the long run affect the
marriage (Chen et al., 2010).
B. A woman who experienced sex abuse when she was a child is likely to have a
troubled sex life, a problem that will in the long run affect her marriage.
