Now that you are familiar with the basics of training and development and with
the challenges faced when dealing with adult learners, think about your own
experiences in the workplace. In particular, think about your involvement as a
trainee. After considering all of the possible times you have been involved in
training choose the one that you felt was the most problematic. Then answer the
following questions, using as much space as needed.
1. What do believe were the major flaws in the training?
For me, I believe that everyone has different working or personal experience, so
don’t use the same training method for all the people. It depends on personal
experience, age and environment. It would become bored if the trainer use the
same method and the employee they would also feel bored. Don’t assume old
models work. It’s common for conferences and training events to use the same
exact formats throughout the day: lectures, panel sessions and workshops. It’s also
common that most people complain about most aspects of most conferences they
go to. These facts are related. If you want to improve the quality of something,
change (and risk) is required. If you ever gone to a conference, I’m sure you’ve
complained about how limiting the sessions were, how boring and dull the
speakers were, or how hard it was to meet anyone. Don’t assume the old models
work.
2. To which learning styles did the training appeal? To which did it fail to appeal?
I think the training appeal to Kinesthetic, people can learn from touching and doing.
It prefers hands-on approaches such as simulations, case studies, and role
playingSome people may forget things after they reading or doing something.
However, what they did become their personal experience and they would never
forget them. Visual and Auditory learning styles would fail to appeal.
3. From what you have learned about adult learners how do you think the training
session in question could have been improved?
From the adult learners sections, I found that “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I
may remember, involved me and I will learn” The best way to decide how to
evaluate learner achievement is to make sure you identify what you want the
Participants to know, and what evidence you need to demonstrate this knowledge.
The person should be involved and had their own experience.
4. If you were to offer three particular suggestions to the trainers regarding how to
improve this particular training in the future, what would they be:
1. Let these people do the assessments/evaluations first. An assessment is
how you definitively know your learners have met your learning objectives. It also
helps you improve the learning experience by illustrating subject areas that are not
quite clear to your learners.
2. Gauging learner understanding. Before you training, you should let them
know our goals and objectives.
3. Incorporating learning styles & keys into a lesson plan.
