The text book first mentions that Aspirin is a commonly used drug in the U.S. and that aspirin is a
harmless drug that is dangerous only when taken in massive doses which is why its becoming
more a overall drug problem now. For example, for most females we usually take aspirin when its
that time of month. Depending on the size of the pill, we’ll either take one or two for the day to
stop cramps. I know a couple of people who will continually take a couple of aspirin if the cramps
continue but they don’t realize that taking to many in a short period of time will cause some
serious aliments such as internal bleeding, ulcers and so on.

The talk on marijuana is whether it should be considered as a drug because there hasn’t been any
news on if it causes any damage to the body. On the other hand, there videos that surfaces
around social media a couple times each other how cannabis oil benefit those with seizures. Lets
say a child who is about 10 years old and is experiencing a seizures, his parents will quickly run up
to him and hold him down so that they’re able to give him a couple shots through a needle of
cannabis oil in the inside of his cheek. After waiting about less than 1-2 minutes the kid is free of
seizures. Medical marijuana is becoming legal in a couple states while there are still thousands of
Americans locked up for possession of marijuana which needs to be looked at and drop charges
are those who are currently in jail for that reason while their state has passed law on medical
marijuana. But in other words, there are those who smoke weed for other reasons and most
because they feel like they need to which is considered as addiction. The debate on that is that
for those who smoke weed everyday don’t think they’re addicted because they don’t believe
weed is a drug and it isn’t known to cause bad side effect like cigarettes would necessarily do.

Addiction is using a substance that you must feel like you should depend on it for whatever
reason that is. For example, a couple of people smoke weed to fall asleep at night, to eat, or just
for no apparent reason at all and they just feel the need to smoke. If someone has that much
dependance on a drug then they should be aware that they’re addicted. Even though it hasn’t
been proven that weed can medically send those to the hospital, what they use to roll with can.
Even when removing the tobacco from the paper that it comes in, the paper itself has carcinogen
on it which causes those who smoke it with weed get addicted. And its widely ignored.

As mentioned in the TED talk, drug use has always been a part of society and it will continue to
be in the future as well. Therefore I believe this is a relevant topic for most people, maybe even
more so for young adults as that is when you are most likely to try them. I think it is really
interesting how some substances such as alcohol is widely socially acceptable and legal while
others are not, even though they are all chemical substances altering your body. Kornblum (2016)
writes that the US spends about $166 billion annually on alcohol related problems, which itself
really surprised me, but that is only the economic perspective of the drug (SAMSHA, 2008, as
cited by Kornblum, 2016). Even more insane is the amounts of people who die from liver failure,
suicide or traffic accidents caused directly by alcohol, which seems to be around 50 000 people
each year (Statistical Abstract, 2010, as cited by Kornblum, 2016).

Whether alcohol should be treated as a mental illness or not as Kornblum (2016) suggests, I am
not sure. However, I think that the best way to help alcoholics is the same as with people with
such illnesses, namely to stop stigmatizing getting professional help. Alcoholics Anonymous is one
example of a rehabilitation strategy, another one might be to see a therapist or trying some other
community program. Since there are actually ways to help alcoholics, and other drug abusers, I
think it is a shame that we instead often fetishize these substances and its users.

Although there are obvious problems with all these substances I am not personally against people
trying them out, since there will always be a demand. I think instead of focusing on criminalizing
small possessions it is more important to advise on how to make the usage more secure.
Marijuana legalization is of course quite a recent ‘experiment in the US, but I believe it mostly
comes with benefits such as less opioid usage, less black market sales and maybe even less
alcohol related deaths.
