Concept summary
Globalization is a very complex concept that continues to ignite debate among different
scholars, researchers, scientists, and even the general public. Although globalization is
commonly believed as the global interconnectedness, the aspect of globalization continues to
spar different opinions in regards to whether it is a new or old phenomena. Most importantly,
there is a general agreement that globalization stems from different concepts internationalization,
liberalization, and westernization. From our text, the concept of globalization is perceived in
different dimensions. There are those who claim that globalization is a new phenomenon while
others sees it as an old phenomenon which began from the pre-modern period from the birth of
capitalism and regional markets. With the industrial revolution taking center stage, the aspect of
globalization took a totally new dimension as this was the time massive advancement in
technology brought a new dawn towards the development of globalized economy. Globalization
is thus an old concept that stems out from continuous and sporadic advancement in technology
that has created an opportunity for increased interaction of people across different global
environment.
Annotated bibliography
Woodward, I., Skrbis, Z., & Bean, C. (2008). Attitudes towards globalization and
cosmopolitanism: cultural diversity, personal consumption and the national economy. The
British Journal of Sociology, 59(2), 207-226.
In this article, Woodward, Skrbis and Bean (2008) highlight the differentiated attitudes
towards a global economy. In their analysis, they contend to the fact that globalization is not a
new phenomenon because it traces its influence from the period of industrial revolution which
heightened the development of new globalized and industrial economies. In this article, the
author main argument is that globalization which is a sporadic development of economies
through interaction and new perspectives within the technological frameworks has led to the
development of individual outlooks, behaviors and feelings that transcends local and
international boundaries. In this regard, the growth of globalization and technological
advancement according to these authors has resulted to a more open economies based on cultural
influence, diversity and consumption.
Mikander, P. (2016). Globalization as continuing colonialism–Critical global citizenship education
in an unequal world. JSSE-Journal of Social Science Education, 70-79.
Mikander (2016) in his article argue that globalization though a new concept is a
continuation of colonialism of a critical global citizenship in an unequal world. In his discussion
he contends to his overarching ideas that the concept of globalization and global economy are
fatalistic things that are simply taking place before our eyes. In other words, he argues that
globalization is a new concept that continues to take center stage due to the sporadic emergence
of new technology within the new century. However, he agrees to the fact that there is need to
rethink and recognize globalization as a historical continuation of colonialism. In other words, he
argues that globalization is a continuation of global inequality that should be recognized and
opposed as much as possible especially by the developing nations that have suffered at the
expense industrialized economies.
Steger, M. B. (2017). Globalization: A very short introduction (Vol. 86). Oxford University
Press.
In this book, Stager evaluates the concept of globalization and agrees to the fact that
globalization is indeed an old concept/phenomena that emerges from the preexisting concepts.
Although it is new revolution, Stager, 2017 highlights different perspectives and contends to the
idea that globalization is an old concept that rejuvenates dues to the growing knowledge within
the context of technology and the opening of the global boundaries thus improving and
facilitating communication, trade and commerce, travel, and other important aspects that
promotes global economic developments. In this book, Stager, 2017 also gives a brief summary
of globalization which is commonly thought to be a new phenomenon though not the case.
