The purpose of this assignment is for you to apply the concepts and information you learned in this unit
about union management issues. In addition, this assignment provides you with the opportunity to use
your skills, expertise, and experience to enrich your response.
For this assignment, review the scenario below, and respond to the questions.
Paramedic Jones has allowed his advanced cardiac life support certification to expire and was placed on
a suspended without pay basis for 5 days. However, he was allowed to remain as the only paramedic on
the unit until overtime relief could be contacted and report for duty, which was approximately 6 hours
later.
As the new leader for your department, one of the issues you must deal with is grievances. After
consulting with the union representative, Paramedic Jones has filed a grievance concerning how his
particular situation was handled. As you review the communications, you discover that while under the
previous general manager’s watch, there have been three other incidents similar to Paramedic Jones’s in
the last year. Furthermore, each occurrence was handled in a different way.
Due to the union’s involvement in this, you have reviewed the local policies, which stipulate
certifications must be maintained as the mandatory minimum job qualification to practice as a
paramedic under the medical director’s license. Additionally, you reviewed the written communications
from earlier in the year regarding the three other incidents similar in nature emergency medical
technician (EMT) Dunham, EMT Smith, and Paramedic Dawson.
The first similar occurrence was in January of this year when Paramedic Dawson invalidated her
paramedic certification by not passing the advanced cardiovascular life support recertification
requirements. She was given 8 days to present due cause as to why she should not be terminated from
employment for failure to maintain the mandatory minimum job qualification. She was placed on a
suspended with pay basis pending review of the potential termination. This was documented with a
written suspension, and she was later terminated.
The second similar occurrence was in March, when EMT Dunham’s basic life support and
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS/CPR) certifications expired. Dunham was placed on a suspended
without pay basis until he could receive proper certification. This was documented with a written
suspension.
The third incident also occurred in March when EMT Smith thought his BLS Heartsaver Instructor
certification was enough to cover his BLS Healthcare Provider certification and subsequently failed to
recertify. He was suspended with pay pending his recertification in BLS Healthcare Provider, for a
maximum of no more than 1 week.
Although all four of these occurrences are slightly different in nature, they are all still classified as failure
to maintain the mandatory minimum job qualification to practice as emergency service providers. In
addition, as documented in each occurrence, each suspension was handled differently. There are no
extenuating circumstances documented in Jones’s grievance that would give any other considerations to
the grievance.
Discuss the case study thoroughly, with attention paid to the ethics involved, management theories, and
union concepts.
Did Jones do the right thing by writing the grievance? Why, or why not?
What management concept might apply to this scenario? What labor relations concepts might apply?
Discuss the other three cases as well. Were the actions taken appropriate in light of the requirements
for maintaining job position and advancement?
Is it correct that each was handled in a different way? Why, or why not?
Discuss leadership actions and their effect on morale, productivity, and cooperation. Could this become
an explosive situation? Why, or why not?
How would you handle this current situation with Jones knowing how the past ones had been dealt
with?
Provide your responses in a Word document. The completed case study must be a minimum of three
pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages.
You must use APA style guidelines when writing your paper. All sources used, including the textbook,
must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. To
supplement your discussion, you may use journal articles, other case studies, scholarly papers, and
websites you may find pertinent. You are required to use at least two references.
