Adult development and aging

As individuals age throughout adulthood there are a variety of memory and cognitive changes which will occur throughout the aging process. There are both normal and abnormal processes which can occur, and a variety of factors or habits that can impact how memory and cognition will change. For example, as individuals age, their speed of processing will decline, meaning they process information more slowly and less efficiently (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). Additionally, there will be a decline in processing resources, meaning adults have less attention to apply to various situations (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). These are both normal changes impacting cognition; however, there are also a variety of changes which will also occur to memory as adults age. It is normal that adults age, there is a significant decline in their working memory, which involves the processes or structures used to hold information, make decisions, solve problems, or learn information (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). Explicit memory will also decline with age (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). However, there are a variety of methods in which one could implement that would lead to better outcomes in regard to memory and cognition. For example, a healthy diet and good nutrition are vital for having a memory which functions well (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). Taking vitamins, like B vitamins 6, 9, or 12 can also aid memory and cognition as adults age (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2018). These methods are useful to implement, not only to help cognitive process function well into age, but also because they help us to better steward our bodies, which are gifts from God. Scripture asks us, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body,” (English Standard Version Bible,  2001. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Because our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, we should steward it well, which means doing what we can to create healthy habits which will help our cognition and memory as we age.

Data Gathering And Analysis

ED504 Research Project Outline

There are three parts to Stage 1 of the Research Proposal, which is the final product generated in the ED504 course. The purpose of the outline is to help candidates solidify a topic and approach to a research project for addressing an existing problem in the environment of their field of study. The problem must be identified and supported by existing data and should be applicable to the candidate’s field of study (i.e., library media, counseling, teaching).

Remember, this is an outline. You need to provide sufficient detail to inform your instructor, but responses are not fully fleshed out. The complete details are provided in the Research Proposal and not here in the outline. To provide better guidance, responses to questions in the outline should not exceed one paragraph.

Part 1 Data Gathering/Analysis

Gather data previously collected at the classroom, school, or district level to justify the identification of a topic for study.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying and analyzing a problem or weakness currently found in candidate’s field of study for the purpose of completing the Research Proposal assignment. Remember, the Research Proposal is a proposal for an experimental research design.

RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS:

1. Identify the problem that you wish to research and write a problem statement.

The problem this study aims to address is a lack of ineffective exercise routines that includes a mixture of aerobics activity and exercise training. The routine is effective in controlling weight, boosting energy, combating health conditions and diseases, and having better sleep.

2. Identify your hypothesis. (Chapter 1)

Hypothesis: Daily exercise routine will help an individual in combating heath conditions and diseases. Regular exercise activities can help a person in managing most of the health problems.

3. Elaborate on how you determined this was a problem and write a purpose statement based on your problem statement.

I determined this problem by reviewing literature and discovered that some did not actually benefit from the exercise exercises. The study’s purpose is to offer suggestions on how to conduct effective exercises that can improve health outcomes.

4. Construct a graphical representation that allows for easy analysis of your compiled data that highlights your problem. Identify the source of the data and discuss its credibility. Examples of existing data might include school district test scores, absenteeism reports, graduation rates, cost, ranks, divorce rates, living habits, etc.

The Effects of Exercise and Physical Activity on Weight Loss and Maintenance

Source: https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0033062018301440-gr2.jpg

The source of the data is credible because it comes from one of the articles in the Elsevier Journals, which is credible database base ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0033062018301440).

5. Discuss the data in your graphical representation to confirm that a problem or weakness can be addressed that is appropriate to the scope of the required program.

The graph shows control and experimental groups measured against weight loss. Exercise combined with proper diet results to better health because it reduces weight loss. Weight loss exposed people to various diseases, including high blood pressure and heart disease.

6. Connect the problem or weakness to trends or patterns represented in your data.

A lack of effective exercise can lead to emergence of health issues such as increased weight, a lack of enough sleep and better energy levels.

Part 2 Literature Review

You will conduct a literature review following APA format (most recent published edition) and become familiar with the scholarly debate surrounding your topic and what scholars and practitioners say about the best way to address the particular need or problem identified through the data analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Reviewing and writing a Review of Literature on your chosen topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment.

RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS:

1. Provide a developed statement of the research problem that demonstrates a sound and focused understanding of the identified problem.

It is important to have an effective daily exercise routine that includes a mixture of aerobics activity and exercise training. The routine is effective in controlling weight, boosting energy, combating health conditions and diseases, and having better sleep.

2. Identify best practice(s) that will be used to address the problem or weakness. This should be a theorist or theory that is known and documented in the research literature.

A person should engage in aerobic where they have at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week. Moderate aerobics is effective for maintaining good cardiac rhythm. They should also engage in strength training at least two times a week.

3. Describe and justify a trend/theory that will be used to validate the use of the identified best practice(s) and clearly highlight the connection with the identified trend/theory to address the problem.

The theory that will be used to advance the research is self-determination theory. This theory is anchored on the premise that not all motivations are created equal. The theory suggests that individuals develop their motivational approach for a given activity based on how well participation in that activity meets their basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

4. Provide reference listings (in APA format) for a minimum of 10 sources (largely representative of the most recent five years) you will use to describe/justify the best practice and/or theory identified. Be sure to include only sources that show clear connections with the best practice(s) and/or theory/trend identified as viable responses to the problem/weakness presented.

5. Provide a summary of the literature and how it justifies the need for the study. You are synthesizing your collection of sources into a brief 1-2 paragraph summary. Do NOT describe the specific studies included in your sources.

Physical activity has many health benefits. For instance, physical activity (PA) and exercise training (ET) are associated with reduced CV risk, improved cardio-metabolic risk factors, and facilitates weight loss through creating a negative energy balance. Effective training is also important and incorporates training at consistent times. Exercising at a consistent versus variable time of day relates to greater moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among weight loss maintainers. High volumes of exercise are associated with weight loss and the prevention of weight gain. In fact, studies utilizing supervised exercise, to confirm the completion of the recommended dose of exercise. Also, exercising improves the sleep quality.

Part 3 Methodology/Action Plan

You will write a measurable and executable action plan on your chosen topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment. The action plan must be APA formatted (most recently published edition). Collaborative resources must be included, and each category in the grading rubric must be addressed. Evidence of collaboration with appropriate stakeholders is required.

OBJECTIVE: Writing a measurable and executable action plan on an identified topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment.

RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS:

1. Identify the population and provide a description of the participant sample and the sampling technique.

The research population will use inactive adults between the ages of 18-40 and they will be randomly selected.

2. Justify the sampling technique and the sample chosen.

Random sampling will be used to reduce the researcher’s selection bias.

3. Describe the role of all participants and the plan to prevent harm to them, including the plan for protecting student confidentiality and data.

Participants will be used to show the impact of timing during physical activity (PA) and exercise training (ET) on sleep quality, cardiac rhythm and weight loss. Data from participants will not be shared to any third party. Once research is completed, information from participants will be destroyed permanently. Before participating in the study, participants will also have to feel the consent form.

4. Provide a description of steps and sequence of steps required to complete a successful study.

The following steps will be followed during the research:

1. Identifying the current problem and formulating an hypothesis

2. Identifying the research variables (independent and dependent variable)

3. Selecting participants within the targeted population (after advertisement)

4. Grouping the participants randomly into control and experimental group

5. Collecting data

6. Analyzing collected data and making conclusions

7. Submitting the research findings to the relevant faculty/stakeholders

8. Destroying participant data permanently to protect their privacy

5. Justify the plan of action with respect to the identified problem and purpose. Be sure to justify the connection between the plan and the expected impact on student achievement.

The plan of action is encouraging people to engage in aerobic where they have at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week. Moderate aerobics is effective for maintaining good cardiac rhythm. They should also engage in strength training at least two times a week. All these activities are beneficial to health.

6. Define constitutive and operational definitions of key terms.

Physical activity- any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure (definition from WHO)

Exercise training- use of repetitive body movements to build endurance, flexibility, or muscular strength

Timing- the choice, judgement, or control of when something should be done/a specific point in which something happens

7. Identify the variables in the study and define how each will be measured.

Independent variable- Timing session for PA and ET, it will remain constant throughout the study

Dependent variable- Sleep quality, cardiac rhythm and weight loss. These parameters will be measured by comparing control group (participants who will not take part in any form of PA or ET) and experimental group (participants who will take part in PA and ET).

8. Describe the data that is needed for the study and how it will be collected. Include a description of the timeline for the data collection.

Data needed relates to sleep quality, cardiac rhythm and weigh loss. The data will be measured weekly.

9. Identify any instrument that will be used in the study and its validity and reliability measures.

A digital scale will be used to measure weight while Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) will measure sleep quality and time. Cardiac rhythm will be measured using Holter Monitor.

10. Describe any threats to the internal validity of the study and measures for control.

Reading errors from on various instruments could result to errors in findings. The threats would be controlled by rereading the scale during measurement.

11. Describe the limitations or outside interferences that might interfere with improved student achievement.

The external limitation is that some factors like diet have could impact sleep quality, cardiac rhythm and weight loss among the participants. The researcher will control for this threat by subjecting experimental and control group to same conditions (except for physical activity and exercise training).

What is the item that stood out to you, and why

The emotional aspect is essential in our daily activities as it significantly functions our existence. The article I read provided research, findings, and a conclusion on emotion. It gave positive and negative aspects of emotion. Some positive emotional parts are impression, intimacy, and influence—the element of intimacy aid an individual in acquiring their bonds with others. The influence and impression function is based on the information others get from expressing positive emotion. (Cosmides (2018). Positive information can be amicably used in the social context to achieve our goals and maintain social standards that motivate others to achieve their goals. Conversely, negative emotions can result in hatred that may make people distance themselves from others.

What did the authors of the study you selected examine in their research? What did they hypothesize and why (rationale)?

In the article, the author examined emotions’ role in success. He stated that emotion plays an enormous role in the production of success. It helps an individual not only address but also overcome the problem that may arise on their way. In texture, an element of fear may appear, enabling an individual to have an adaptive mechanism, thus escaping from a disaster. The author of the article hypotheses that emotion forms and maintains a social relationship. (Cosmides (2018). He also believes that feeling can establish and maintain a social position concerning others by generating self-esteem. The rationale that the author gives is that emotion help in either increasing or reducing bond with others. If there is a rise in positive emotion, the bond between the person increases and helps strengthen love, and the individual feels like staying close to one another. On the other hand, the rise in negative emotion may lead to individuals distancing from one another.

What methods did they use?

In this research, there was the conduction of experiment on a selected group sample. The chosen people were from different groups; some were those abandoned and neglected by their family members, while others lived in harmony with their parents. The data was conducted based on positive and negative emotions and analysis. Based on the importance of the social bond research, the social isolation of individuals does not only led to poor health and well-being but also inhibits the development of social, emotional, and cognitive skills.

What were the most meaningful findings the authors reported?

The author’s finding identified the nature of the social function. It stated that the social process of emotion is said to have an evolutionary origin. The culture and the social norms are the core aspects that lead to the evolution of emotion. Emotion regulation and standards play a core role in understanding the reason behind the success of life is essential. For a human being to thrive in life requires a social life. Emotion helps a person in establishing and maintaining cooperation and harmony with other and other social groups. In this stage, sentiment is given the role of affiliation. Based on the distancing function of the feeling, the feeling helps a person distance themselves from others regarding social status and power. The sentiment’s social effect is based on how it is expressed in the social and cultural context. The aspect of anger from the emotion is expressed in many ways, such as shouting, criticizing, or keeping quiet. The sentiment is well known to vary in different cultural contexts. The distancing function in the emotional context symbolizes isolation and social fear.

On the other hand, the affiliation aspect is based on happiness and other positive emotions such as love and gratitude. The feeling has a preference on the individual goal and social situation. Despite the sentiment having a social function, it has a social effect, which is predicted based on relational goals. Contempt, anger, and hate can be a social function in case an individual is predicted

What is one limitation of their study?

In this study, several limitations arose. First, the research did not disclose the relationship between emotion and individual success. The participant of this study based the experiment on a particular experience regarding feeling. This indicates that it could have been subjected to errors as some people could have given a piece of misleading information based on the background. In addition, the sample size was small. The experiment used 480 individuals; this small sample size could have given bias when acting as a representative of the entire population. In addition, the research did not show the functionality of emotion in regulating legal and social norms.

How do the findings from this study help you better understand the content from this week?

The finding played an essential understanding of the role that emotion plays concerning individual success. Based on the sentiment, I have come to know how we can deal with the problems in the social environment by either increasing on reducing the psychological or distancing from one another. In our daily activities, I realize that positive emotions such as happiness and pride or love usually strengthen social bonds and may be used in decision-making. Thus through this research, I can appreciate the aspect of emotion based on the culture and social norms. Emotion has a tremendous role in producing success and solving a dispute.

RQ: What are the economic and social impacts that ADHD has on schools, families, the workforce, and the health system? IV1: Does the ADHD impact varies based on the families, schools health force and workforce; participants (pre versus post) IV2: Does ADHD impact vary based on the families, schools health force, and workforce (yes versus no) DV: Deviant result Occurrences #Gap: For the last decade, there is much research that has been done on ADHD since it has become a severe public health problem. This disorder has been seen to cause a problem with how children perform in school, their ability to socialize, and their functionality in society. It is worth noting that the world keeps on changing. The above research that has been done does not explain the recent ADHD diagnosis and its effectiveness. Much research has been done showing the rise of different new characteristics of ADHD. Unfortunately, their new diagnosis has not unfolded. Another core gap is that the leading cause of ADHD has not been known. Some research says it is a result of the genes but is not yet proven though it is researched to have a contributing factor. But the main gaps that need to be revealed is the main economic and social factor that ADHD have in families, schools, health services, and work foce. Hypothesis: There is a substantial difference in the social and economic impact of ADHD on families, the workforce, schools, and the health system

Advantages and disadvantages of eldercare

Discussion 2: Later Life Considerations

As more and more of the U.S. and world population ages into old age, it is becoming increasingly critical that societies have a better understanding of what works well and what perhaps does not work so well when considering eldercare. What types of living situations ensure happier and healthier elders? What factors in eldercare may impact working adults and loved ones? What’s the effect of varied living situations on societies and economies as a whole? Finally, what does the way a family or society treat elders say about that family or society in terms of values and belief systems? As you consider these questions, further think about how building your understanding of eldercare might help you not only in your professional work but also how it might impact you on a personal level as well.

For this Discussion, you will explore the advantages and disadvantages of eldercare living.

To Prepare

Consider the following:

Imagine you are middle-aged and belong to a family where your children are late adolescents. You have two teenage children and two very elderly parents. In some cultures, it is common for elders to live in an independent living community, retirement community, or assisted living communities. In other cultures, elders will come live with an adult child.

Post and describe at least one advantage and one disadvantage of each living arrangement (i.e., independent living, assisted living, and living with an adult child).

What are the strategies to address illicit drug use among parents, whose children are in the care of child protective services?

Hardy, R., Fani, N., Jovanovic, T., & Michopoulos, V. (2018). Food addiction and substance addiction in women: Common clinical characteristics. Appetite, 120, 367-373. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.appet.2017.09.026

Addiction to food and other substances in women is explained in the study. The study included 229 female PTSD patients who were classified into groups based on whether they also struggled with an eating disorder, substance use disorder, or neither. All of the data used in the study was gathered using questionnaires and surveys created by the authors. This data included information on trauma, diet, emotional eating, drug use, and demographics. Female participants with histories of substance abuse and food addiction shared similar symptoms and difficulties with emotional regulation, the study revealed (Hardy et al., 2018). According to the findings, chemical dependency and food dependency share the same brain region. This research demonstrated how my early life food addiction paved the way for my current struggles with substance misuse. Based on this article, I conclude that my predilection for binge eating was a prelude to other addictive tendencies. The study highlights that the contribution to the addiction to illicit drug use is similar to that of food. This insight is of value in offering significant intervention for better prevention to protect children.

Gordon, D. (2018). The Family Framework in a Drug Treatment Court.  Socius: Sociological Research for a Dynamic World,  4, 237802311876146. https://doi.org/10.1177/2378023118761462

The study highlights family challenges by addressing drug abuse, which is known to break families and reduce attention to parenting. More and more states are attempting to modify their responses to drug offenses by constructing drug courts. Programs using this approach combine punitive measures with therapeutic ones in an attempt to reform affected individuals. The author uses a specific example from a drug court to broadly describe the institutional procedures that define this type of intervention. The author explains how the “family framework,” the belief that clients are like children and “grow up” in the sense of the initiative, is fundamental to the values, social standards, and processes of drug court professionals based on ethnographic observation of the court’s evaluation on interviews with program experts, and assessment of files and media accounts (Gordon, 2018). The concepts of dependency and deservingness were embedded in the family structure, and these were based on race and class. In this way, the court could cater to a largely white and middle-class clientele, thanks to the influence of these conceptual frameworks in shaping program selection and completion. According to the author, this case exemplifies how states can strictly control and limit access to their initiatives to a select group of citizens.

Youth Growing Up in Families Experiencing Parental Substance Use Disorders and Homelessness: A High-Risk Population.  Journal Of Child And Adolescent Psychopharmacology,  29(10), 773-782. https://doi.org/10.1089/cap.2019.0011

This research aimed to learn more about the challenges faced by families dealing with parental substance use disorders (SUDs) and homelessness, as well as their perspectives on the supports available to them. The study’s participants reported high levels of trauma, guilt, and apprehension about disclosing substance use disorders (Ijadi-Maghsoodi et al., 2019). Difficulties were also identified in the study’s focus areas of communication, discussions of substance use, and family and youth goal setting, all of which are crucial to preventing SUDs. It was also revealed distinct pressures associated with navigating housing and services within the community. Our findings highlight the necessity for a family-based SUD-preventive intervention for youth growing up in homes with parental SUDs and suffering homelessness to address the heightened SUD risk. Moreover, our research can help improve clinical and housing services for this vital group.

Lewis, Q., Smith, B., Offiong, A., Prioleau, M., & Powell, T. (2021). When a house is never a home: Housing instability among youth affected by parental drug abuse.  Child Abuse &Amp; Neglect,  118, 105131. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chiabu.2021.105131

Substance misuse among parents has far-reaching and devastating effects on children. Housing insecurity is just one of the many dangers these young people face. Substance abuse among parents is a major risk factor for a child not living with one of their biological parents. While studies demonstrate that these young people are more likely to encounter housing insecurity, very little is known about their actual lived experiences in housing (Lewis et al., 2021). Youth who have experienced parental substance abuse has been exposed to the toxic stress and trauma of a lack of stable housing. When young people’s lives are complicated by multiple traumatic events, they must have access to safe, stable, and dependable housing options. To better understand the effects of adverse childhood experiences, researchers should investigate how to incorporate housing variables into ACEs measures. An increase in housing assistance for families with children would be supported by the findings of such a study, which might also provide light on the stress experienced by marginalized groups.

The study is about conducting a training program for the parents as a strategy to prevent child abuse and neglect that is known to emerge due to various reasons, including illicit drug abuse. Training intervention has been shown to be working significantly in preparing parents to handle things with moderation for the sake of their children to avoid ruining their future (Sahillioglu & Akman, 2021). The study also shows that the program is working significantly and has a permanent impact on the targeted parents where they would prioritize on the interest of their children. It was evident in the study that positive and lasting effects on the awareness and understanding of parenting would help society move forward.
