Cultural Influences on Psychological Conditions

Discussion: Cultural Influences on Psychological Conditions

Cultures have different views of understanding psychological disorders and psychological maladjustment. For instance, some cultures may view psychological conditions resulting from a bio-medical condition such as a brain condition. Other cultures view psychological conditions deriving from psychosocial stressors from social causes. Still other cultures combine multiple explanations. For this reason, as a working professional, it will be important for you to understand how culture influences the way psychological conditions are treated.

For this Discussion, you will examine the influence of culture on psychological conditions or treatments.

To Prepare:
  • Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider a psychological condition or treatment you are unfamiliar with and the culture in which it occurs.
By Day 4

Post and describe a psychological condition or treatment that was unfamiliar to you. Then, explain why you think this condition or treatment occurs in the culture you read about but not in others, that you know about.

Roles Culture, Gender, and Religion in Emotion Experience and Expression

Items that stood out in the study

The number of items in the article is emotional experiences and how they are expressed in different individuals, the variation of the emotional expression concerning social, gender, and cultural relationship. These items stood out because there is a great variation in how different genders, religions, and people of different social backgrounds express emotion. The empirical research revealed these items on gender, religion, and social life. The researcher wanted to know the roles these three items play in individual emotions and how they are expressed between different individuals.

What did the authors of the study you selected examine in their research? What did they hypothesize and why (rationale)?

The author examined how often people face basic and secondary emotions in the study. He also examined the appropriateness in which different individuals express emotions to people of different relationships. The study also examined the appropriateness of feeling and the act of expressing basic emotions regarding religion and cultural background. (DeLeersnyder & Boiger (2016). The author hypothesis that there is a meaningful relationship between the expression of emotion and feelings. The author also hypothesis that there is a variation in the expression of emotions in different social relationships. The author’s rationale indicated that different individuals have separate ways of accepting various aspects related to emotions, and their ways of expressing themselves vary from one person to another.

What methods did they use?

The author of this study used a questionnaire as a method of collecting the data. In the study, a total of fifty-four adults were used, including twenty-six males and twenty-eight females living in Sri Lanka and the western province. The research used a convenience sampling method to collect the data. The participants’ ages ranged from 17 to 64 years, while the mean age was 28 years. The participants of the research were Sinhalese Buddhists. Participation in this study was voluntary. A questionnaire was developed to examine the emotional experience and expressions of different individuals. The researcher allocated time to explain the aim of the study to the participant, and they were given instructions for filling out the questionnaire.

Meaningful findings the authors

The researcher found that regarding the experience of basic and secondary emotions, there were significant effects from gender. Thus, it indicated that different genders had a difference in the feelings of anger, shyness, sadness, and pleasure. The research found that female experiences sadness more as compared to males. Concerning anger, it was found that males feel more anger than females. Based on the level of pleasure and shyness, the research found that female experiences more pleasure and shyness than men. Based on the aspect of expressing basic and secondary emotion, it was found that male’s express anger more than females, while females’ express shyness more than males. Regarding emotional expression based on social relationship, the research found a meaningful relationship that differs from the appropriateness of emotional expression. It was found that the acts of the individual expressing their sadness to their spouse are extremely high.

Limitation to the study

The limitation of this study is that the sampling number used is small. Only fifty-four participants were used in this study; thus, this research could be subject to biasness. This could have given a misleading result as this number is too little to be used as the representative of Sri Lanka and the western province.

How do the findings from this study help you better understand the content from this week?

There are several things that I can appreciate from the finding of the study. I can appreciate that different individual experiences emotions differently and have diverse ways of expressing them. I can also appreciate that there is a variation in the expression of emotions concerning social relationships. I am now better at understanding the aspects of sadness, anger, and pleasure in different genders. I can now appreciate that we have expressed our emotions based on our social relationships with the different parties. This study has played a critical role in understanding myself better and my friends.

Part 2

The study’s hypothesis stated that non-pharmacology therapy is an appropriate therapy for ADHD Compared to Methylphenidate stimulant therapy for children aged 4-6 years. The limitation of the study was the environment in which the study was conducted could result in biased results. This is because the classroom environment may be a high stimulation for the children. It may arise distractions that may result in poor results during the evaluation process. Another limitation is that a person collecting the data may affect performance. This limitation can be avoided by educating the parent and teacher on the criteria for scoring the student. In addition, participants can be taken to classrooms where they are unfamiliar with their teachers.

Imposing religious values in therapy

In 1,250-1,500 words, describe the ethical implications of implementing religion or spirituality into therapy regarding the four areas of ethical consideration listed below. Explain how the Christian worldview can be used to help guide ethical decision making for each of these areas.

  1. Competence
  2. Multiple relationships
  3. Imposing religious values in therapy
  4. Informed consent

The Christian worldview GCU Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work document attached has been included as a possible reference.

Use a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources as well as the textbook and the APA Code of Ethics with APA formatted in-text citations and references. Refer to the informed consent document.

Type of activity recommend in training

1. Human infants are at first limited to gross movements of the trunk, arms, and legs. The ability to move one finger independently of the other matures over time.  Consider the different abilities described in this chapter (judging intentions) and those of which they are personally aware (walking). What hypothesis would you suggest about which brain areas controlling movement mature early and which mature later?

2. You have been hired as a consultant to a group of new coaches. You are to explain muscle action to them in a way that they can use it to assist the athletes they are coaching. One group of coaches works with figure skaters, a second group works with baseball pitchers, and the third group is training athletes for the cross-country team. Describe the types of activities that you would expect to be important in each of the athletic events described. Indicate what type of muscle activity would be needed, as well as the type of activity that you would recommend in training.

3.In 1945, Lloyd Olsen was sent by his wife to decapitate a chicken for the evening meal. Lloyd removed the chicken’s head; however, the bird did not die. In fact, it moved around as if pecking for food and that night slept as though it had tucked its head under its wing.

Lloyd was so impressed with the bird’s survival that a week later, he took him to the University of Utah for investigation. The scientists discovered that the ax blade has failed to sever the jugular vein. This failure along with a blood clot prevented the bird from bleeding to death.

In addition, the head had been separated from the body while most of the brain stem was left behind. Because much of a chicken’s behavior is controlled by reflexive actions connected to the brain stem, the bird was able to continue functioning in a fairly normal fashion.

Lloyd provided food and water to the chicken with an eyedropper, and the bird lived for 18 months. During this time, the chicken enjoyed a tour across the United States, recognition in national magazines, and a Guinness World Record. He is still celebrated annually at the Mike the Headless Chicken Festival in Fruita, Colorado. (Search “Mike the Headless Chicken” to access numerous websites and a YouTube video!)

After sharing this story with students, ask them: Why can a chicken continue to walk with its head cut off and a human being cannot?

Role of power in conflict

  • Think about an intergroup conflict with which you are familiar or interested. It may be contemporary or historical.
  • Consider the human needs that each party is or was trying to address in the conflict and how they affected the conflict.

  • Briefly describe the conflict that you selected.
  • Briefly describe the needs that each party is or was trying to address in the conflict and explain how they affected the conflict.
  • Explain the role of power in the conflict, including if, how, and to what degree power played a part in it.
  • Explain how you would expect power to influence—or how it did influence—the outcome of the conflict (its resolution, management, etc.).

Stress Management from Mind Tools

6-1 AB (200 words and one reference)

Frustration is more likely to lead to aggression when you take your frustrations out on someone else who may be frustrated. When thinking about this question I kept coming back to Black Friday and all the chaos that entails. I remember hearing about someone shooting someone outside a toys-R-us because the other person got the last of a specific toy. Then all the fights in Walmart during Black Friday are uploaded to YouTube. When our drive to reach a goal is blocked by external factors we experience frustration which, in turn, creates an aggressive drive and this can lead to aggressive behavior. (Nickerson, 2021).

I have dealt with anger issues most of my life. Unfortunately, it took me until my 30s to find a practice that helps. One solution is pretty self-explanatory, avoid high levels of negative stimuli. If you get stressed easily with normal shopping going out during black Friday is simply poking the bear. What has helped me tremendously is hard to learn and takes practice but is worth the effort. I take pause before allowing myself to respond. Doesn’t have to be a long pause just one to assess the stimuli and determine if the response reflects the situation or my emotional state.

Anger is a powerful emotion that can lead to severe problems in your relationships and career if left unbridled. (Anger Management Test – Abridged, n.d.). Another good website I found while on my journey to handle my anger better is this one,  How Good Is Your Anger Management? – Stress Management from Mind Tools. It gives you a breakdown of a questionnaire you took and how your answers were evaluated. It was and still is an interesting read, after taking the short questionnaire.

6-1 JR (200 words and one reference)

If you are a gamer then you know what it is to be so frustrated that it pushes you to the point to act out of anger by (Rage quitting or screaming mean things into the screen and mic). This effect is know that Frustration-Aggression Hypothesis this posits “theory suggests that frustration—anything that prevents us from reaching goals we are seeking—leads to the arousal of a drive whose primary goal is that of harming some person or object—particularly the perceived cause of frustration” (Branscombe, 2016). This theory suggests that frustration is the only source of aggression (Branscombe, 2016). Something that I personally do to help with my frustration is to break a cup in glass using a hammer, this helps with releasing the frustration. I also like to build up a scream and yell Santa mozzarella  (in an Italian accent) into the sky. The silliness of the idea of someone yelling santa mozzarella using an italian accent into the sky is something that might help with someone’s frustration. I did not know this at first but i was engaging in what Brascombe (2016) describes as “inducing thoughts and feelings that are incompatible with anger or aggression”

Branscombe (2016) mentions the technique of counting to ten, the idea is to divert thought of frustration to something that is inconsistent with the thoughts of frustration. Learning how to divert attention away from frustration can be beneficial to everyone as it can help people avoid conflict. I feel like this is a technique that is not talked about enough or taught to us to as children or adults.

6-2 LL (200 words and one reference)

We want to understand the why, therefore, knowledge can help us understand better and also help us predict their future actions. This process is known as attribution. This process not only concerns our efforts to understand the causes behind others’ behaviors, we also use it to understand the causes behind our own behavior (Branscombe, 2016). The way we perceive the situations will determine our willingness to help in the situation. For example, if we see one who waste all of their time on doing anything, then seeks help to get things done, will be a way for one to not be willing to help. Also, the value type of self-enhancement is most negatively related to helping behavior. Self-enhancement values of power and achievement are expressed by care for the self, and not for others (Daniel, 2015). This is the main cause of one not helping others.

However, from a Christian’s framework, the typical response is not justified due to we are to put others before ourselves. This also requires a line to be drawn so we would not be maliciously used by others for our downfall. Helping others should be at the top of the list for a Christian, regardless of the person they are helping condition. The idea to not focus on self enhancement, but rather the community’s enhancement.

Clinical Dialogue – Module 3 from Ibeth Gutierrez

COLLAPSE

Primary Issue

In identifying the primary issue with the Stone family, it is clear that various factors contribute to problems within the family system. The Stones have a liberal point of view that often determines how they build relationships with others. For this case, the issue becomes apparent when Everette Stone, the oldest sibling of 5, brings his girlfriend home for the holidays. Shortly after meeting Meredith for the first time, it is clear that she is unwelcome due to how she presents herself. After many failed attempts to impress the Stones, Everette’s mother shares with his son that she disapproves of his relationship. Although the Stones express having liberal views, they display judgmental and rude behavior toward those who do not think and act as they do. Meredith was treated disrespectfully, causing conflict within the family.

Techniques

To promote change within the family system, I will implement strategies that identify patterns and behaviors that enable negative thinking toward others. In doing so, the Stones will understand how their point of view creates dysfunction in the family system. According to Weeks & Fife (2014), building a case formulation helps to understand characteristics and patterns that affect relationships.

Furthermore, it may be necessary to create a genogram upon changing negative behaviors within the Stone family structure. Genograms are an effective tool used to collect information to find where patterns of thoughts and behaviors originated (Weeks & Fife, 2014). It is apparent that the Stones are set in their closed-minded thinking. By incorporating a genogram into their family system, they learn to be accepting of others.

Challenges

Additional challenges within the family include secrecy and lack of communication. Later, it was discovered that Sybil Stone was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It is understandable why Sybil felt it was necessary to keep this secret from her family. However, honesty is critical in the family systems to stabilize the foundation.

Communication is also critical as it is an opportunity for family members to express their wants and needs and share their differences. Sybil uses blame to deflect from communicating with her family. As a result of this, it creates conflict between Meredith and the family. Regardless of Meredith’s point of view, it is evident that Sybil avoided any opportunity she had to get to know her.

Techniques and Strategies

1. Journaling

2. Intersystem Assessment Model

3. Role Play

Cultural Factors

Cultural factors to consider about the Stones is the diversity present in the family systems. The Stone Family openly accepts same-sex couples, interracial relationships, and other free-spirited/thinking perspectives. Sybil and Kelly Stone are parents who embrace cultural relativism. On the other hand, the Stone Family is less welcoming and accepting to those with a less liberal point of view in life. For this situation, it would be necessary to be mindful of how they see the world.

As mentioned in the podcast, Dr. Jennifer Gess states that clients present their knowledge, attitude, skills, behaviors, and emotions (Walden University, 2019). This idea also applies to the Stone Family. Ultimately, the goal for the Stones is to enable pleasing interactions with peers. Transforming their negative thoughts and behaviors into positive ones will allow them to identify their differences, and recognize how other cultures impact the lives others, changing their relationship with Meredith.

Adaptation of Techniques

Telemental health counseling was vital for providing care for patients. Although counselors are not interested in this form of therapy, it benefits clients in dire need of counseling. One way I would adapt my journaling technique is by sharing a template and using it as a guide for the family I am working with. The guide will have a baseline of open-ended questions, and I will follow up with the Stones about their given task. Journaling is a personal matter that does not require to be done in person. Therefore, I believe that this technique will be effective for telemental health counseling.

Three legal challenges of families

Imagine you are assigned the task of presenting at a local mental health and wellness agency about legal challenges families face. For this assignment, you will develop a PowerPoint presentation consisting of 15-20 slides, not including the title slide and the APA citations slide(s). Images may be included in the presentation but be sure to keep all image file sizes low for this presentation.

Include the following:

  • Describe two to three legal challenges families face today regarding mental health issues.
  • Using your state’s websites, describe four laws, regarding mental health issues, that impact today’s families.
  • Next, explain the impact of those four laws on today’s family. Discuss why you selected these laws.
  • Explain the benefits of the four laws and how they are intended to support the family structure.
  • Explain the potential negative effect of the four laws and how the family might be adversely impacted.
  • Next, identify two laws for specific family members (i.e., Defense of Marriage Act. (DOMA), divorce and custody laws, child support). Recommend two state resources that could assist families dealing with these legal challenges.
  • Citing three to five scholarly sources, provide a summary statement, explaining your views on the two laws that you identified for specific family members. Defend your answers regarding the intent of these two laws.

Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
