Homelessness in the Community
Homelessness is a condition whereby people lack a permanent dwelling place like a
house. Such people are not able to acquire o maintain a regular and secure housing. In fact, most
of them are not in the position to meet their basic needs and earn their living. This broad term
also refers to those individuals who have night-time residence in homeless shelters, residence in
motels for a long time, domestic violence shelters, vehicles and shanty town structures. Statistics
have revealed that there were approximately 100 million homeless individuals worldwide in
2005. Also, it was indicated that over 1 billion people are settlers, refugees, lack enough housing
or live in temporary shelters (Bainbridge & Carrizales, 2017). Many nations have integrated
different programs and services that are geared towards the homeless people. Service learning is
an educational approach that aims at combining learning goals with the community service to
offer pragmatic a progressive education while considering the societal needs. Through service
learning, the Salvation Army can be able to reach down to the homeless people in the streets and
engage them with such programs and services that will ensure they benefit from service learning.
Service learning will have benefits about the homelessness in that it will provide these
individuals feel accepted in the society, engage them in activities that can earn them some cash,
better understand and respond to the needs of these persons and above all guide them towards
finding a permanent place of dwelling.
Community organization is a broad scope of series at the community level that is geared
towards bringing forth wanted improvement in the social wellbeing of the individuals the people.
Ideally, it connects means community work and mobilizations. The Salvation has had several
communities works in connection to homelessness. This organization several non-profit

into the system .here, they are helped regarding being self-relation and how to find permanent
places of dwelling. There is a lot of service learning whereby students can link up with the
community in helping the homeless persons within. Much of the community work involved is
voluntary and includes activities like offering clothing, food, shelter and financial support to the
affected individuals. It also consists of carrying out campaigns and encouraging the homeless
persons to join the program whereby they are assisted in their needs. Service learning has proven
to be vital in empowering these individuals as well as reaching the targeted goals in these
programs.
The Salvation Army has had some significant community partnerships with different
communities with high cases of homelessness. For instance, the Salvation Army has many
extensions programs that reach different levels of the society. The organization also partners with
various institutions of learning like universities and colleges. These partnerships aim to create a
platform whereby the students can connect with the homeless in the community. The students
can assist this individual by doing voluntary work like offering them clothes and learning
programs. This organization has also partnered with other non-profits organizations in the
community that have been providing both material and financial support to the programs that
Salvation Army has about homelessness outreach. These community partnerships have
contributed significantly to the success of the Salvation Army in comparing homelessness within
the community. Many people have been able to find homes and shelters through the programs
supported by the community partnerships.
However, the organization has been faced with several cross-cultural challenges. These
are the challenges that emanate from the differences in cultural beliefs and preferences of
different individuals in the community. Culture has a significant impact on the way behave and

perceive of different ideas and issues. It influences their participation in some programs that are
made to benefit the community. This organization has been coming across various individuals
from diverse cultural backgrounds. Some believe it is their destiny and fate to remain homeless
and that nothing can be done about while others may hold the thinking that accepting aid from
the community is the dishonorable act and therefore they end up becoming adamant to receive
the grant offered to them. However, Salvation Army has trained professionals can deal with such
individuals are inclined to accept support because of their cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Although it may seem like a challenge, the organization sees it as a motivation to advance its
community work towards helping the homeless.
This organization has had humanitarian considerations, especially concerning
homelessness. Through its programs on homelessness, it has had the matters of human beings at
their heart. Here, the church organization has been struggling to offer permanent housing to the
homeless individuals. It has provided general residence to the homeless and even gives financial
and material support to these individuals. Through this program, many homeless individuals
have been able to procure permanent housing all thanks to the program run by this church.
Considerations on the different cultural backgrounds and preferences are also made when dealing
these persons, and therefore the organization places the humanitarian concerns at the center.
Permanent residence is provided through the volunteering program whereby individuals offer
housing facilities to the homeless.
Salvation Army has been encouraging volunteers to come on board and join its
community-based work that helps the homeless. It holds campaigns whereby the public are
invited to participate in the program. Notably, it has partnered with many learning institutions
like colleges and universities. Here, students can join in for service learning programs. The

students can offer their services to the homeless while learning and applying what they have
learned in the classroom about the same. The volunteers engage in activities like holding a public
function for the homeless where food, clothing and other materials are provided to them. Again,
many volunteers have also offered to provide housing to some homeless individuals in the
community. This has much helped in mitigating the new issue from the society.
There are several roadblocks or limitations that the organization faces in its quest to
provide services to the homeless individuals in the community. One of them is legal
jurisdictions. Every county has their codes and regulation regarding community and programs.
Different legal procedures must be followed by setting up the residence centers for the homeless
persons. Others include cultural limitations and financial problems that limit the much that the
church can go in helping the homeless in the community. However, despite these roadblocks, the
church has been able to reach to the homeless and offer assistance to them.
The Salvation Army community service has a future vision of achieving zero cases of
homelessness in the community. It is striving very hard to encourage the general public in
actively participating in the program and volunteer their services. The main aim here is to help
these individuals to find a place to reside in permanently and offer financial assistance to ensure
they can cater for their basic needs. The organization at reaching to as many homeless persons
out there as possible and bring them on board to the program where they will be helped to find a
permanent residence (Brush, Gultekin & Grim, 2016). The Salvation Army also aims to have as
many partnerships with as many learning institutions as possible to provide service-learning
opportunities to the students. Service learning has proven to be fruitful in helping the homeless
since the students have an academic background in dealing with such conditions and are quite
compassionate about it.

This organization has been faced with some several challenges in providing these
services to the homeless in the society. The primary challenge is financial problems. Salvation
Army has some difficulties in reaching down to the homeless. Much of the activities that are
undertaken include financial expenditures. The organization has not been receiving enough
financial assistance that facilitates most of these activities. Another challenge is cultural
challenge whereby most individuals feel inclined against accepting help from the church
organization. These individuals come from different cultural backgrounds and therefore have
different preferences and beliefs. For this reason, the church organization has to put into
consideration how to specially deal with these individuals in the course of helping them. Despite
the Salvation Army training, it volunteers on how to best deal with the cross-cultural challenges;
it has not been able to reach out to some communities wholly. Another problem is the
partnerships that the church has about the homeless problem. Most of the organizations are
reluctant to offer timely support to the affected individuals.
The organization has been making significant improvements in offering support to the
homeless. Advances have made on the side of service learning. The church has been establishing
partnerships with different learning institutions al, across the nation. This has enabled more and
more students to join in and offer their services to the community homeless individuals. The
service learning is volunteering extension program that allows the student deal with real life
situation and responds positively to such. This has boosted the ability of the students to help the
community in aiding the homeless individuals. Much improvement has been made on the
services provided by the organization. For instance, it has included programs that are aimed at
giving a collective residence area where the homeless can come and have shelter. The
individuals are also equipped with food and clothing to cater for their basic needs. This has been

a great deal of advancement since more and more people are having a place of residence that can
be considered secure and healthy.
In conclusion, homelessness is community concern that should involve all in eradicating
it. The homeless individuals require supporting form all members of the community. The
Salvation Army organization has been doing this by bringing on different board volunteers who
are willing to work with it and help such individuals. It has also partnered with various
communities and organizations as well as institutions. Service learning has been critical in
assisting the homeless individuals in the community.
