MAN4143 CBE Contemporary Leadership Challenges InstructionsLeadership is either formal or informal, and it is important to discover which one is a better fit for you as you grow in your career. Your company leaders are asking you to identify a specific leadership role that you would someday like to fill (e.g., Supervisor, Manager, Vice President, Individual Contributor, etc.). Once you have determined the type of leader you would like to become, create an action plan for your career to achieve such a position.

Curious and inquisitive, open-minded, and learning-oriented. Major Types of Leadership Behaviors
Most theories and research on effective leadership behavior involve one or two
broadly defined behaviors, which are sometimes called meta-categories. Some of
the major meta-categories are:
1. Participative Leadership
Participative leadership is all about the efforts of a leader to help others make the decisions
they should be making. In addition to planning, organizing, and controlling, leading is also
about facilitating participation. The participative leader allows subordinates to have some
influence over decisions that affect them or others. The use of empowering decision-making
reflects a strong concern for relations objectives, such as subordinate commitment and
development.
2. Delegation
“No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit.”

Delegation is often perceived as the greatest expression of the manager’s confidence in a
subordinate. After all, when a manager delegates responsibility to someone, the manager is not
relieved of that responsibility but is trusting a subordinate to complete the work according to
leadership’s expectations.
3. Empowerment
Is empowerment a form of motivation? There are four defining elements of effective
empowerment:




Meaningful work
High self-efficacy
Self-determination
Ability to influence relevant events
4. Transformational Leader
This meta-category is often referred to as a visionary and inspirational leader since employees are
often challenged to use innovative thinking and consider their personal values. Some
characteristics of transformational and charismatic leaders are similar. They often tend to be the
most memorable leaders.
5. Supportive Leadership
Supportive leadership helps build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Some form of
supporting behavior increases subordinate’s self-confidence and reduces job stress.
The following guidelines indicate ways that managers and leaders can use supportive leadership
effectively:




Show acceptance and positive regard.
Provide sympathy and support when the person is anxious or upset.
Bolster the person’s self-esteem and confidence.
Be willing to listen to and help with personal problems.

them a successful leader.

to be an effective leader, and describes how
they should be developed or used.
