Organizational Behavior
Organizational behavior is the study of the way people interact in an organizational group
setting. The goal of this study is to make business organizations more proficient by applying it
to the management of employees (Investopedia, nd). It helps promote positive behaviors along
with reducing undesired or unethical behaviors. It also helps in the development of employees’
skills and builds motivation. Organizational behavior encourages problem-solving, creates job
satisfaction, and promotes growth for both employees and managers (Kinicki & Fugate, 2016).
Organizational Behavior and Job Skills
How is it that organizational behavior can promote and create all these actions and
opportunities? It can do it with the collaboration of the job skills brought in by the company’s
employees. There are always expectations and deadlines within an organization. Employees
who recognizes the importance of these organizational behaviors will practice good time
management and prioritize their projects to help the organization meet their goals. It takes
people skills to be a good manager and to be able to gain the respect and loyalty of employees.
Communication between manager, employees, and coworkers will help to build those
relationships needed to create a strong productive team. All business’ deal with conflict from
individual trauma, to team dissention, and organizational issues. Problem-solving is the most
sought-after job skill employers look for (Kinickii & Fugate, 2016). An employee who comes to
the table with this skill could help troubleshoot conflicts at the lower level before they elevate to
management.
Improved Job Performance
Is organizational behavior the only thing that drives how we perform at work? The
answer to that is no! Every employee has the responsibility to practice some self-management as

well. An individual may have a skill that they excel in, however utilizing multiple skills will
improve job performance to a higher level. The more an employee uses the less familiar skills,
the easier they will become and the more the individual and the organization will benefit from
them. One could make using organizational behavior skills a habit by practicing them in
everyday life situations.
Manage your time wisely. Have your day planned out or a copy of your agenda on hand.
Nothing is worse than being late for a meeting, especially if the boss is present. It can be very
disruptive when people walk into a meeting late or leave early. Utilizing time management in
the work place will ensure that you stay focused and on schedule. This will show leadership that
they can rely on you to be where you need to be when representing the company. Prioritizing
projects will help ensure deadlines and goals are met. The first project assigned does not
necessarily mean that it needs to be the first one worked. Evaluate how much time you need to
commit to each project to get them done right and on time. Your productivity will not go
unnoticed by leadership as they will know what projects are completed and by whom.
Communication is an important part of organizational and individual behavior. Feedback goes
up the chain and it goes down the chain. Providing feedback on project concerns or sharing new
project ideas to management will show them that you are focused and actively seeking ways to
improve the company. Communicating with coworkers will help keep you informed of other
projects or concerns going on in the organization and it will show leadership that you are peopleoriented, which is a good trait for management positions. Use your communication to help build
a strong and healthy relationship with management and coworkers. This will show your ability
to easily collaborate with individuals and teams. Being able to problem-solve situations at the
employee level will show that you have critical thinking and leadership skills. It will also reduce

the number of conflicts and issues management will have to resolve.
Utilizing all these skills will catch the notice of leadership. If management sees the
successful use of these organizational behavior skills, it is a green flag that there is growth within
the organization for you.
Decision Making and Problem Solving
How does organizational behavior help us with decision-making and problem-solving?
Kinicki and Fugate (2016) compares it to taking a journey where the destination is chosen, the
route planned and mapped, and important stops identified before the trip begins. This
organizational behavior journey has three important stops. The first stop is to spend time needed
to define the problem based on what the desired outcome is. The second stop is identifying
potential causes using organizational behavior concepts. The more causes identified, the better
the chances of identifying the correct ones. Stop three is the time to make recommendations and
act. In some situations, both actions can be done, but in others it may be that only a
recommendation is fitting (Kinicki and Fugate, 2016).
Unethical Behavior
Organizational behavior is intolerant of unethical conduct. Unethical behavior in the
workplace can cause great damage to the organization and people who work there (Kinicki &
Fugate, 2016). Unfortunately, there is unethical behavior in all organizations. From using office
supplies for personal projects, to browsing the internet instead of working, or using company
time to do personal business. Although these might seem harmless, it is costing the company
money in time and resources. Although not illegal, it can still cost an employee their job and a
bad recommendation. Stealing trade secrets or embezzling money can have serious
consequences to both the company and the offender. A company could lose huge amounts of

money by losing the competitive advantage, having their weaknesses exposed, or their research
and development become known to competitors. As for the offender, it could lead to enormous
court fees and jail time (Smith & Kramer, nd).
Conclusion
Organizational behavior is used to create a more efficient organization by applying it to
the managing of its employees. When combined with employee personal job skills it can provide
job satisfaction and a healthy work environment. It encourages the use of decision-making and
problem-solving skills. It allows for employee growth at all levels and reduces unethical
behavior. Know the organizational behavior concepts and practice the skills connected to them
in your everyday life. It will make adapting to any job much easier.
