The purpose of this assignment is two-fold. First, we will examine and analyze the speed and availability
of information that is accessible through the Internet. We examine the good and the bad aspects of
modern information technology. The second purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with the
Turnitin process that is integral to the ethical component of scholastic research and reporting.
This is the only time in your scholastic careers that you will be allowed to copy and paste someone else’s
work for an assignment. We are doing this so that you can become familiar with the anti plagiarism
service provided by Turnitin.
The completed template (click on link Assignment template) is to be submitted to the Turnitin Template
Dropbox no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT/EST on Thursday of Module 3.
You will then write a brief essay (not to exceed 500 words) to answer the questions at the end of this
assignment. This essay will be submitted as a Word document attachment to the Turnitin Essay Dropbox
no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT/EST on Sunday of Module 3. Title your essay
TurnitinAssignment_(Student’s Last Name, First Initial).
Although you will not receive a grade for this assignment, you must successfully complete it as part of
the requirement for passing this course.
To get started, follow these steps on your computer.
Steps
1. On the Search Bar of your browser’s search engine (e.g., Google or Yahoo), type in the words
“ethics” and hit “Enter” or click on the “Go” arrow.
2. On the search results page, note the number of results or “hits” and write it down for later
reference.
3. Click on any one of the links on the result page. Note the URL (address) of the website and write
it down for later reference.
4. Highlight and copy a block of text (100 – 300 words) from this website and paste it into the
template provided for this exercise. Then, under the paragraph, copy and paste the URL of the
website from which you copied the paragraph.
5. For this step, you will need to go to the Saint Leo Library Home Page. Go to Online Library
Resources. Click on Databases. Access the EBSCO Host website and log on. On any of the EBSCO
sites, search for the word “ethics.” On the left side bar where it says Refine Your Search, leave
all the default settings except you should check the box Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.
Then click on the Search button.
6. Select any two articles by clicking on their links. It is better to select those articles that are
presented in HTML Full Text format, since it copies better than the text from PDF files.
7. Just like you did before, highlight and copy a block of text (100 – 300 words) from the two
articles and paste the text on the two lower blocks of the template. Then, under the paragraph,
copy and paste the URL of the website from which you copied the paragraph.
8. Save the completed template as a Microsoft Word document with the title “Module 3 Turnitin
Simulation” followed by your last name and first initial. Example:
Module_3_Turnitin_Simulation_SmithK. Close the document, but remember what file you saved
it under.
9. In this step, you will submit your Module 3 Turnitin Simulation Assignment to the Turnitin
Template Dropbox. This Dropbox basket is linked to Turnitin.
10. After waiting approximately 5 – 15 minutes, check to see if there is a percentage (%) indicated
next to your submission. This percentage represents the amount of text that was found to be an
exact match with other literature. Note this percentage and write it down for later reference.
11. Click on the percentage figure next to your report. This will open a new window that shows the
Turnitin report for the submitted document. On top, there is information that identifies the
paper and shows the percentage of matching text. Another section contains the URLs for each of
the websites from which the text originated. Click on each one to compare the submitted text to
the original text.
12. Finally, save the report by clicking on the Save Report to Disk button.
13. After completing these steps, write an essay that answers the following questions on a MS Word
document. Submit the 500 word (or less) essay to the Turnitin Essay Dropbox. This Dropbox
basket is also linked to Turnitin.
Questions
1. What Internet search engine did you use to conduct the search for this assignment (e.g., Google,
Yahoo…)?
2. How many results (hits) on the search topic “ethics” does the search engine indicate? How
many results were indicated for the peer-reviewed article search on EBSCO Host?
3. Discuss how quickly you were able to find the websites related to the “ethics” topic, and
contrast it to the length of time you estimate would have taken for you to find the same
information without the use the Internet.
4. Discuss and briefly analyze the Turnitin process. Did the Turnitin software find all the copied and
pasted text? What, if any are its limitations, and what are some of the potential pitfalls
associated with its use.
Please limit your essay to a maximum of 500 words.
