Introduction
ERP stands for enterprise resource planning which is a set of different modules that work
to fulfill various business transactions. These transactions include payroll activities, accounting
functions, and procurement activities. When purchasing an ERP system there are certain
characteristics that it has to fulfill. This includes the ability of the ERP to meet the organization’s
functional needs, be scalable, have an easy to use interface, be competitively priced, and have
after sales support from the vendor. There are more features to look out for when purchasing an
ERP. There are currently three major ERP vendors; SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics.
There is a need to compare the three major ERP vendors to identify the unique characteristics
that make them gain a competitive edge.
Discussion
SAP Enterprise Resource Planning software is developed by a German company, SAP
SE. SAP means Systems Applications and Products. The SAP ERP software incorporates
virtually all the key business functions of an organization in its functionality. SAP offers
business solutions for small businesses, mid-sized businesses, and enterprises (SAP, 2018). SAP
offers ERP systems that are both for on-premise deployment as well as on cloud. Additionally,
SAP uses Artificial Intelligence in its later versions of ERP software to enable adaptability of the
software. The SAP ERP software is currently in about 25 industries making it one of the most
versatile solutions.

SAP ERP software is also able to integrate many features from the wide industrial reach
that the company covers. SAP ERP is also able to integrate into Customer Relationship
Management, Supply Chain Management, and Supplier Relationship Management software. The
SAP ERP software is developed on SAP’s web application servers. The SAP ERP software
currently commands the largest market share of the three ERP vendors (Business Suite, 2011).
The implementation and support of SAP ERP software take around 12 to 30 months.
Oracle is another major ERP vendor. The Oracle systems are developed and supported by
Oracle Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). The Oracle ERP software is
supported by on-premise or cloud deployment. This makes the system just as flexible as the SAP
ERP software. The average time that it takes to implement an Oracle ERP system is about 11
months. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the Oracle ERP is considered to be in-between
SAP and Microsoft dynamics with the later being the lowest TCO of the three. In a survey of the
three major ERP vendors, Oracle had the highest customer satisfaction rate of 80% (Business
Suite, 2011). The Oracle Fusion Application is the latest ERP system that Oracle has released.
The Oracle ERP software also comes with some external functions which include having
a customer portal, vendor portal, and self-service portal. The Oracle system is also open to other
third-party integrations. The ability to customize an Oracle ERP system is difficult and costly
and there are no native mobile applications that come to support the overall system. The mobile
applications that are available are developed from other Oracle partners which makes it an added
cost.
Microsoft Dynamics ERP solution is developed by Microsoft. Microsoft Dynamics is
targeted at Small and Medium Businesses and the larger enterprises. Some of the most notable
Microsoft Dynamics software includes the AX, NAV, GP, C5, and SL. Microsoft Dynamics

offers the option of multiple in-built integrations as compared to Oracle and SAP. The
integrations include Microsoft Word and Excel, Office 365, and Microsoft project server
integration among others. Microsoft Dynamics has a lower implementation cost as compared to
others.
Service-Oriented Architecture in an ERP system breaks the business tier into smaller
clearer units that support the ERP functionality. The following table compares the SOA features
offered by SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the ERP solution that a business selects is important for the successful
exploitation of business opportunities. SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics are all able ERP
systems. They all have their advantages and disadvantages over each other. However, based on

the customer survey conducted and the feedback, Oracle is the most appropriate ERP that I
would recommend for any business. The Oracle system has the highest customer satisfaction, has
a high initial cost but has a lower running cost in the long-run.
