Theoretical & Contextual Overview of Architecture Assignment 1 is intended to define a clear theoretical and contextual underpinning towards the
development of your thesis. It defines your interest through an informed body of knowledge
and reference projects that supports the validity and relevance of your ideas. As part of this
research you will formulate the visual and verbal communication approach that will enable you
to express your ideas and research in an effective and impactful manner.
Deliverables:
1. Reading: Develop 3 detailed annotated bibliography. one must be from the reading
group, two chosen on your own to support and begin to navigate your area of interest
(visit the library as one must be form a book and one can be a published article). For
each include: Bibliographic information, 5-10 point-form notes that that describes the
relevance of the content within your interest.
2. Reflection: 500 word Personal/theoretical research summery. Personal reflection: why
are you interested and invested in this broader theoretical framework? Why did you
choose to be part of this group and what is motivating you to read these papers?
Include images if relevant.
3. Reference: Choose 5 reference projects that interests you and that somehow reflects
the theoretical framework that you are investigating. Try to include one project by the
author or a project referenced in the reading. All have to be either by historically or
currently influential architects with influential area of practice and substantial
documentation. For each Reference complete the following: Name of Architect, Year,
Place, Artistic Movement/era/architectural style, 3-5 photos/ render (if not realised
work), 3-5 main drawings (including diagram, plan section, elevation), short text about
the relevance of this project in your research (this can be point form)
4. Overview: Title & single phrase overview – this should capture the overarching area of
interest that you have investigated. It is what connects all the various parts of your
research. This should go at the start of your document and can be used as your title.
