1. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND DESCRIPTION
➢ Practical Value: You have encountered written, visual, oral and non-verbal messages in
your lifetime that have shaped your understanding and appreciation of yourself and
others.
This assignment allows you to question how those messages may have altered or shaped
your perception of yourself and others. This activity will improve your ability to
understand simple and complex communication concepts and apply them to your lived
experiences.
➢ Practical Skills: You will improve your reading, comprehension, critical thinking,
intrapersonal, listening, analytical, writing, time management, compliance, intercultural
and reflective skills.

2. PROJECT SCOPE
➢ Purpose: The purpose of this journal is to personalize communication concepts as you
attempt to clarify how written, visual, oral and non-verbal messages have impacted your
understanding and appreciation of yourself, your peers and your world.
3. REQUIREMENTS
➢ Cover Page: Be creative.
➢ Format: Typed and double-spaced. Handwritten journals will not be accepted.
➢ Margins: One-inch margins.
➢ Font: Times New Roman.
➢ Font Size: 12 pt.
➢ Length: Minimum 2 pages. Maximum 3 pages.
➢ There is a 50-point deduction for failing to write at least 2 full pages.
➢ Submission: Please submit your journal on E-Campus by 7AM on the due date.
Please remember to spell check your work. It is important that journals demonstrate
your understanding of course concepts, and that you are able to see examples in your
daily life. Do not recycle textbook examples.

4. DELIVERABLES
In your journals, please complete the following tasks➢ Step 1: Define communication. Describe how and why it is important.
➢ Step 2: Define, them describe similarities and differences between the transactional and
linear communication models.
➢ Step 3: Define and describe self-concept explain how it is related to communication.
➢ Step 4: Describe how communication has shaped your self-concept.
➢ Step 5: Define culture and describe how culture has shaped your self-concept (Do not
recycle textbook examples discuss your ideas and experiences).
➢ Step 6: Define intercultural communication. Discuss challenges you have encountered
in intercultural relationships or interactions and describe how you have overcome the
challenges you discussed.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
➢ Late Work: Late journals will not be accepted
➢ Correct format: Handwritten journals and printed journals will not be accepted.
➢ Submission: Please submit your paper before 7AM on the due date.
6. RUBRIC
➢ Outstanding — 90-100:
Awarded to the student who has applied several concepts from the text and lecture and has incorporated
relevant personal experiences. It is apparent that this student clearly understands the material and the
instructions for the assignment. This person has few spelling & grammatical errors. The journal
consistently conforms to font size and style requirements including margins and page length.
➢ Good — 80-89:
Awarded to the student who has applied some concepts from the text and lecture and has incorporated
personal experiences. It is apparent that this student understands the material and the instructions for
the assignment. This person has some spelling & grammatical errors. The journal conforms to font size
and style requirements including margins and page length.
➢ Fair — 70-79:
Awarded to the student who has mentioned at least one concept from the text and has incorporated a
personal experience. This person did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the assignment. There
are numerous spelling & grammatical errors. The journal conforms to font size and style requirements
including margins and page length.
➢ Poor — 60-69:
Awarded to the student who fails to apply concepts from the text or lecture. This person did not
demonstrate a clear understanding of the assignment. There are numerous spelling & grammatical
errors. The journal does not consistently conform to font size and style requirements including
margins and page length.
➢ Insufficient — 0-59:
Awarded to the student who fails to apply concepts from the text or lecture. This student has late
work, incomplete work, or fails to submit work. Submitted materials are not related to the
assignment. – The journal does not conform to font size and style requirements including margins
and page length. (i.e. – Turned in 1 ½ pages instead of 2-3 pages.)
