Transition from adolescence into adulthood

Discussion Topic: What is Going On Here???

Here is a video on childhood obesity! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC3BNPZQtk8

This week, we make the transition from adolescence into adulthood. As adults, we are responsible for our own decisions. We choose many behaviors that either enhance or harm our health. This week the focus for our discussion will be on obesity – a problem that is plaguing our nation’s children, adolescents, and adults. Before participating in the discussion read the following current article about obesity in the US.

The World Is Fat By CATHERINE RAMPELL

Until 1980, fewer than one in 10 people in industrialized countries like the United States were obese.Today, these rates have doubled or tripled. In almost half of the developed countries, one out of every two people is overweight or obese. These populations are expected to get even heavier in the near future, and in some countries, two out of three people are projected to be obese within 10 years. Those are some of the disturbing statistics from a new report released today by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a research and membership organization that focuses on the world’s richest nations. As you can see, in the rates of overweight and obese residents, the United States is second to only one industrialized country: Mexico. In America, 28 percent of the adult population is obese and 68 percent is overweight; in Mexico, the respective rates are 30 percent and 70 percent. The United States does, however, hold the dubious honor of the fattest population of children, tied with Scotland. (Note that the rates for children are not exactly comparable, though, as different countries report obesity and overweight rates for different age ranges of children). If you would like to read more you can check out the full report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development at The World is Fat.
Then answer the following questions:

  • What is your perspective on the cause of obesity for the large majority of those who are facing this problem?
  • Whether you believe that the primary cause of obesity is genetics or lifestyle what has happened in our society since 1980 that has resulted in
doubled or tripled rates of obesity in adults and children?
  • What can be done in your own community to turn the obesity trend around? What kind of program might you create in this effort to bring health back
    to our society?
  • What advice would you give to a friend coping with a weight issue to help them bring about long-term change?

Note: Remember to cite a source in your primary post.

Concept of research findings

Choose one concept, research finding, or question that stood out to you in your readings and content assigned for this week. Find an empirical research article* about this that was published in the scientific literature in the last 7 years and provide a summary of that article here answering the following questions. Attach the article to your post, and provide an APA style reference for it at the bottom of your post.

  1. What is the item that stood out to you and why?
  2. What did the authors of the study you selected examine in their research? What did they hypothesize and why (rationale)?
  3. What methods did they use? (*Empirical articles have a methods section. If your article does not have a methods section, it is not the correct article to use for this discussion).
  4. What were the most meaningful findings the authors reported?
  5. What is one limitation to their study?
  6. How do the findings from this study help you better understand the content from this week?

Part 2

This week we will practice setting up the gap, rq and hypothesis for the proposal.  Using the format below and discussed in Keiser Live include a draft of each component:

Gap:

Although previous studies have found ___________(citations), no study to date has examined ____________.

RQ:

Is there a relationship between Variable A and Variable B (in name of population being studied)?

Or

Is there a difference in DV based on level of IV (in name of population being studied)?

Hypothesis:

There is a (positive/negative) relationship between Variable A and Variable B (in name of population being studied).

Or

There a difference in DV based on level of IV (in name of population being studied).

Difference between chronometer and autonomy

Ethics for Dummies, by Panza & Potthast, provide written answers to the following questions.  Please give complete answers in complete sentences.

1. What is a moral principle?  How does it differ from a moral rule?

2. What is practical reason?

3. What is the difference between acting from duty and acting from inclination?

4. What is the difference between acting in accord with duty and acting from duty?  (Use the honest shopkeeper as an example.)

5. What is the difference between heteronomy and autonomy?  What is the connection between living ethically and living free?

6. What is a maxim?

7. What is an imperative?  What is the difference between a hypothetical imperative and the categorical imperative?

8. What is the Formula of Universal Law?  Explain what it means.

9. What is a universalizability test?  (NOTE: Panza & Potthast misspell it!)

10. What is the Formula of Humanity?  Explain what it means.

11. What is a kingdom of ends?  How is the Formula of the Kingdom of Ends related to the two previous formulas?

12. What do Panza & Potthast say is the difference between perfect duties and imperfect duties?  (NOTE: In trying to simplify the distinction, they may miss what is essential.  Note later how Mill characterizes the difference.)

13. How does the Formula of Universal Law help distinguish perfect from imperfect duties?  (NOTE: Panza & Potthast do a pretty good job with this.)

14. What is one of the four examples of specific duties Kant uses, and how does violating it also violate the categorical imperative?

15. Why might it be a problem that duties in Kantian ethics are unconditional?

16. Why might it be a problem that Kantian ethics focuses on rationality (and rational beings)?

Kornberg Stages of Moral Development

Required (C05.1): Read the Heinz dilemma (Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development), and consider what you would do if you were in his place. Write down your answer and the reasons behind it. How would your answer fit in Kohlberg’s stages? Are there other responses that Kohlberg would consider “more moral”? If so, how do you feel about this? Do you think Kohlberg’s “Heinz dilemma” is a good measure of one’s morality? Explain.Additionally, Select ONE of the questions below to discuss.

  1. Are people fairly accurate when making attributions about why they have experienced difficulties? What about when good things happen?
  2. Describe and illustrate internal and external attributions. What difficulties can occur if individuals are excessively internal in their attributions? What about someone who is excessively external?
  3. Recall a time when you or someone you know made an attributional error. What were the circumstances that led to the error and what was the impact of the error?
  4. How does our individualistic culture tend to support correspondence bias? Explain.
  5. Using an example to support your ideas, explain what has been called the “victim mentality” in terms of attribution.

NOTE: Make sure you answer all parts of the discussion question.
SUBMISSION – be timely in order to allow your classmates to respond.

Components of biological psychology

For this assignment you will get an opportunity to learn about the various components of biological psychology while gaining insight into a self-selected disease or disorder. Select a topic of interest from the following choose one on your own.

Alzheimer disease

Multi-infarct dementia

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis

Autism

Parkinson’s disease

Closed head injury/Traumatic Brain Injury

Schizophrenia

Lewy Bodies Dementia

Seizure disorders: epilepsy

Fetal alcohol syndrome

Tourette syndrome

Huntington’s disease

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome

Middle cerebral artery stroke

After you have selected your disorder of interest, determine at least one neurotransmitter that is altered (increased or decreased) by the injury or disorder. For some of the disorders, you will find that neurotransmitters are altered at different times or stages. For example, when a person has an epileptic seizure, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) deficiency may be associated with the onset of seizures; however, the levels may be normal during other times.

Your goal will be to identify at least one neurotransmitter that is altered early at some point after the injury or onset of the disorder. State what role the neurotransmitter plays in central nervous system (CNS) functions and then provide an example of what happens when the neurotransmitter is either decreased or increased. If the neurotransmitter changes at a specific time, specify when it is altered. In a Word document, respond to the following:

Identify the disorder or injury you selected and give a brief description.
Identify and describe at least one neurotransmitter that is altered by the disorder or injury.
State the role of the neurotransmitter in the CNS functions and provide an example of what happens when the neurotransmitter is decreased or increased.
Utilize APA format.

Chapter 10:

Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders
Internet Pornography – A Disorder in the Making?

At suburban Riverdale Public School in New Jersey, a visitor recently posed a question to an eighth-grade class: “Have you seen internet pornography?” All 42 students raised their hands. According to a study by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, 70 percent of the nation’s 15-to 17-year-olds have looked at internet pornography, much of it graphically hardcore. Most college students will likely have similarly viewed internet pornography, some quite deliberately and regularly. Some of your students may even feel that they cannot stop doing so. The terms “cyber-compulsive” and “cybersex compulsivity” have been used to describe this tendency and refer to a person who cannot control their use of online pornography. The availability of internet pornography raises a host of issues related to sexuality and mental health. Some individuals, for instance, appear to obsessively and compulsively seek out cybersex, thus raising issues as to whether such behavior constitutes a disorder (e.g., Internet Addiction Disorder – Pornography Type). How viewing pornography affects development of healthy sexuality remains unclear. Some see it as potentially harmful. The range of possible topics for discussion here is large.

You will likely have a range of opinions about whether viewing pornography on the internet can be viewed as a psychological disorder. The links below are some good starting points.

Understanding Racism and White Privilege

What is white privilege and how does our society support “whiteness” as the norm (what is seen as “normal”)? Provide some examples from society to illustrate your responses. How can we, as a society, confront white privilege even when individuals may not know that they are benefiting from white privilege?

You must support your response with scholarly sources in APA format.  Simply stating your opinion is not enough, back up your opinion with citations.  Refer to the DB Grading Rubric for more details.

This chapter will investigate racism, prejudice, and white privilege.
