Rate of in-hospital mortality

Issues: Nursing homes – Inadequate staffing and mandatory overtime

· 1. Why is nurse’s workload so heavy?

· 2.  Are good mandatory nurses after working five days straight?

· 3. Does patients get healthcare, if nurses are mandatory overtime and the lack of adequate nurse staffing can result in longer lengths of stay, patient dissatisfaction, higher readmissions.

I choose these three specific issues regarding nursing homes, Nurses mandatory overtime and under work. These issues need more attention and Patients in understaffed facilities face an increased rate of in-hospital mortality, a higher risk of infection, a rise in postoperative complications, and a greater number of falls.  After a long day shift, nurses are lucky to even sit down and eat dinner. Nurses collapse into bed only to wake up a few brief hours later to start the process over.

Issue: Legalization of Prostitution

Aspect 1: Safety
Pro: Stern, S. W., (2019). Sex workers of the world unite. The American Scholar, pp. 40-54.

The author presents the case, largely though the words of sex-workers themselves, for de-criminalization and for allowing sex workers to control the conditions of their work—that is, to operate brothels themselves, choose their physicians, provide and receive benefits, and work outside brothels if they so choose – which will make them safer and less apt to be exploited.

Con: Der Spiegel Staff. (2013, May). How legalizing prostitution has failed. Der Spiegel Online. https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/human-trafficking-persists-despite-legality-of-prostitution-in-germany-a-902533.html

Staff writers report that since de-criminalization of prostitution in Germany in 2003, exploitation and human trafficking remain significant problems. According to one German law enforcement officer, Germany is a “center for the sexual exploitation of young women from Eastern Europe, as well as a sphere of activity for organized crime groups from around the world” (Germany’s Human Trafficking Problem section)

Aspect 2: SESTA/FOSTA
Pro: (APA citation to article supporting SESTA legislation; brief description of content)

Con: (APA citation to article against SESTA legislation; brief description of content)

Aspect 3: Economics
Pro: (APA citation to article showing better income/standard of living after de-criminalization; brief description of content)

Con: (APA citation to article showing real economic benefit is to pimps, traffickers brief; description of content)

Guiding diagnosis and treatment

Your neighbor tells you that his eleven-year-old daughter has been having behavior and academic problems in school. “Her teacher recommended taking her to the pediatrician to get a prescription for Ritalin,” he said.

In a well-thought-out paper integrating information from the learning resources and module readings, make an argument for why your neighbor should first have his daughter evaluated by a clinical psychologist. Discuss the types of assessment tools the psychologist might use in his or her evaluation and how these tools would help in guiding diagnosis and treatment. Make sure to use appropriate sources of information that ground your argument in well-established, empirically sound science and practice.  Properly cite and reference resources, applying  APA Style .

This paper should be written as a coherent essay, in approximately 700-1000 words, and formatted in  APA Style .  You are encouraged to include insights in your recommendations as you address the key issues outlined above.

Prepare the Thoughtful Response Paper according to the following guidelines:

· Structure your paper utilizing  APA style  (7th Edition); this includes title page,  headings ,  in-text citations , reference page, and general paper format (1-inch margins, double-spaced, appropriately sized  sans serif or serif fonts  – e.g., 12 Times Roman).  An abstract is not required.

· Apply sound writing mechanics: write with clarity, paying attention to spelling, grammar, and syntax.

· Submit to your Assignment Folder as a single document in either Microsoft Word, PDF, or RTF format.

Symptom of addiction disease

Addiction is a disease of the mind, a disease of obsession, and a disease of isolation. The role of a particular substance, whether it is alcohol, opiates, marijuana, gambling, food, or sex, is merely the symptom of the disease, not the disease itself. Any substance has the potential to be abused due to the addiction disease itself. Many naively believe that merely removing the substance from the addicted person will “cure them.” If the disease of addiction were that simple, this disease would not be a rampant social problem.

“The idea of addiction being a neurological disorder is critical to understanding its development and the recovery process” (Recovery Connection, n. d.). There are a variety of reasons and opportunities that support people with addiction seeking help. Whether from internal turmoil and conflict, outside interventions, or a combination of both, clients will seek to stop the addiction cycle. The goal is to develop a healthier lifestyle called recovery. It may take months, years, or decades before this process leads to the path of recovery (Recovery Connection n. d.).

For this Assignment, review this week’s resources and explore co-occurring disorders and their impact on addiction or addictive behavior. You also examine how an individual’s addiction impacts other individuals or society. Support your response with references to the resources and current literature.

Models of cognitive growth and development

Stages of Development

Your behavior develops and evolves throughout your lifespan. While developmental theorists have identified stages or critical periods of life in which certain milestones are typically achieved, research also has found the social environmental influences human development and behavior. As a social worker, understanding the

complexities of development from both universal and individual perspectives is central to achieving social justice for your clients.

Erik Erikson suggested a psychosocial approach to explain human development. He posited that external forces shape your life development, which occurs in specific periods of life from infancy through old age. A highlight of his theory is that each life stage contains specific tasks to be completed and crises to be managed (Knight, 2017).

Jean Piaget is one of the main theorists behind the models of cognitive growth and development. Like Erikson, Piaget presented a stage theory but focused specifically on child cognitive development. According to Piaget, children construct an understanding of the world around them using the same basic structure, but it is their life experiences that shape their behavior (Siegler, 2016).

Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.

Jean Piaget 1896-1980 Segment 5

Description

Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, was one of the first to take Freud’s work and move it in a slightly different direction. He believed there are four stages of human development, which he called the cognitive development theory.

Assignment: Examine Research for your Signature Assignment

This week your task is to prepare an annotated outline for your Signature Assignment. Use the following criteria to organize your outline, which will become the basis of your Signature Assignment.

· The Signature Assignment for this course is to identify a current social problem with which a social worker may be involved. As part of your presentation of the problem, be sure to describe how elements of human rights and social justice intersect with this social problem.

· Select a population that would require social work services related to this problem.

· Select a developmental phase of life (i.e., infancy and early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, adulthood, or late adulthood), and then explain the implications of this problem on an individual’s life course trajectory.

· Along with the developmental theory related to the stage of life you identified above, identify one theory of human behavior and the social environment that is used to support work with this social problem. Find at least two sources to support this claim.

· Examine how you as a social worker would advocate for the affected population regarding this problem.

Support your assessment of human behavior in social environments by drawing upon at least five scholarly works in the discipline of social work.

Length: 2-3 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

Need for Protection from Terrorism

Discussion: Weighing Costs, Benefits in the Right to Freedom and Privacy versus the Need for Protection from Terrorism

Reducing terrorism is not an easy feat. Methods to identify and manage potential terrorism tend to fall along a continuum from the general to the specific. General measures are those in which many people are affected, such as screening of large numbers of people and their belongings to detect plans or material related to terrorism. This typically takes place at airports, train stations, and immigration/customs services. Similarly, the U.S. government has accessed all cell phone records. More specific methods to identify and manage potential terrorism have included monitoring “chatter” that consists of communication among possible terrorists. Forms of profiling have also been conducted to examine personal and ecological aspects of potential terrorist suspects or terrorist-prone regions. In very specific cases, relevant terrorist-related data are gathered based on interviews with known or suspected terrorists.

Some of the methods to reduce terrorism might infringe upon citizens’ civil rights to freedom and privacy. In the United States, the following constitutional amendments are some of the specific civil rights afforded citizens that may conflict with methods to reduce terrorism:

Amendment I, Free speech and freedom of religion: Does the government have the right to stockpile and monitor cellphone, internet, or other forms of communication among its citizens? Can people of a certain religion be forced to give up their religion or face strict government control?

Amendment IV, Freedom from unreasonable searches or seizure of property by legal authorities: Can the government search or confiscate property without due process?

Amendment V, Due process that consists of having a predictable form of justice in which citizens are formally accused of potential crimes through specified legal procedures that allow them to view evidence against them and argue against the charges: Can certain people have their activities and whereabouts monitored and recorded without due process?

Amendment XIV, Rights of U.S. citizens are further defined and include due process and rights not to be deprived of “life, liberty, property” without due cause: Can citizens be questioned or detained by legal authorities without due cause? (U.S. Senate, n.d.)

Citizens around the world in developed countries tend to be guaranteed many similar rights by their own country’s constitution. Many governments have patterned their own constitutions after the U.S. Constitution, which was developed in the 1700s based on practices in Great Britain and France at that time (National Archives, n.d.). Arguably, places without constitutional guarantee of rights likely have “human rights,” which require that people be treated with decency and respect.

Terrorism has been recognized as a significant global problem that needs to be reduced. In doing so, does the government or other legal officials have the right to potentially infringe upon citizen’s civil liberties and rights?

In this Discussion, you will review scholarly evidence and argue one side of the argument below based on the evidence:

  • Some infringement of civil or human rights is necessary in order to detect and reduce terrorism, and reducing terrorism is worth the cost of infringement; or
  • Infringement of civil or human rights is not worth the cost, and measures taken to detect and reduce terrorism must follow laws and customs that protect civil or human rights.

Note: If you are an international student, you may base your Discussion on your local or regional Constitution and relevant legislation, policies, or case law.

To prepare:

  • Review the Learning Resources, especially legal decisions designed to detect and prevent terrorism.
  • Consider your empathy-bias regarding whether the potential costs of restricting freedom and privacy are worth the benefits of combating terrorism.
  • Take a side: the costs to personal freedom and privacy are worth the benefits or the costs are not worth the benefits of combating terrorism.
  • Gather scholarly literature, which may include Learning Resources to support your viewpoint.

Justify and explain your position concerning how the costs to personal freedom and privacy are worth the benefits of reducing terrorism, or how these costs are not worth the benefits of combating terrorism.

  • Explain how your viewpoint may affect the type of job that you will consider as a forensic psychology professional.

Leadership and Influence Processes

This week’s topic is on Leadership and Influence Processes. A major area of focus within the leadership research is bias, particularly with regard to gender. You may review the lecture slides to get some background on the major theories in this area and also check out this Ted talk (Links to an external site.) for some interesting perspective (prior to next class). However, we will discuss this in more detail next class.

For the current activity (which is to be completed individually), you are going to complete an Implicit Association Test (IAT), which assesses unconscious/hidden gender bias toward leadership (checkout this Wiki page for background on its application in social science research (Links to an external site.)).

For this activity, please use this link to access the assessment, which usually takes between 10-15 minutes (make sure you pay very close attention to the instructions): https://wiseli.wisc.edu/research/gender-leadership-iat/ (Links to an external site.)

Also note, you may select the non-research option if you don’t want your demographic data to be collected. Once you complete the assessment, make note of your results and answer the following questions:

(1) First, what did your results indicate?

(2) Were you surprised by these results? Why?

(3) What was your reaction to the IAT? Do you find it to be a valid tool for assessing gender bias in leadership?

(4) Imagine you were in a consultant role, and an organization approached you to address bias in their selection and promotion decisions. What ideas or steps might people take to become more aware of their unconscious biases, especially as it pertains to leadership?

Principles Metaphysics of Morals

Kant’s Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals, provide written answers to the following questions.  Please give complete answers in complete sentences.

1. According to Kant, what is the only thing which can be considered good without qualification, and why?

2. What argument from human nature does Kant provide to establish that happiness is not the end of human life?

3. How does Kant contrast actions contrary to duty, actions in accord with duty but done from inclination, and actions done from duty?  What is Kant trying to establish about the moral worth of action, and what is the argument?

4. How does Kant interpret the biblical command to love one’s neighbor and even one’s enemy?

5. What does Kant mean by “duty”?  What is the difference between duty and prudence?

6. What test does Kant propose to determine whether a proposed course of action is consistent with duty?  How does this test follow from his concept of duty?

Second half of questions same topic:

Why, according to Kant, can the concept of duty he has sketched not be derived from experience?

Why, according to Kant, can morality not be derived from examples?  Why, for instance, is the example of Jesus Christ not sufficient?

What is the difference between what Kant calls the practical good and the pleasant, and how is this distinction relevant to the concept of an imperative?

What is the difference between hypothetical and categorical imperatives?  What are the two kinds of hypothetical imperatives and how are they distinguished?

What is Kant’s first formulation of the categorical imperative (the formula of universal law), and how does he arrive at it?

What four types of duties do Kant’s four examples illustrate, and how does each of them demonstrate the application of the categorical imperative in its first formulation?

What is Kant’s second formulation of the categorical imperative (the formula of the end-in-itself), and how does he arrive at it?  How does each of Kant’s four examples demonstrate the application of the categorical imperative in its second formulation?

Objective approaches to assessment

Both Majors Answer These Two Questions:

· Have you ever been assessed qualitatively?  What was your reaction?

· Some people argue that objective approaches to assessment are superior to qualitative methods.  Where do you stand on this issue?

School Counselors ONLY Answer These Two Additional Questions

· Identify ten adults you know who could serve as “experts” with elementary or secondary students exploring occupations.

· Visit/Phone/Email a local school counselor. Interview him/her to learn about specific assessments conducted specifically regarding career development.  Also, find out about the career center (virtual or brick and mortar) offered to students.

CMHC Counselors ONLY Answer These Two Additional Questions

· Visit/Phone/Email a local career center. Interview at least one employee (try for a counselor, please) at the center regarding its strengths and weaknesses.

· Identify resources within your community (brick and mortar or virtual) that could be used in assisting a client with career counseling.

After posting your original response, read other postings, and post a response to at least two classmates using the ABC model.

One concept of research finding

Choose one concept, research finding, or question that stood out to you in your readings and content assigned for this week. Find an empirical research article about this that was published in the scientific literature and provide a summary of that article here answering the following questions. Attach the article to your post, and provide an APA style reference for it at the bottom of your post.

1. What is the item that stood out to you and why?

2. What did the authors of the study you selected examine in their research? What did they hypothesize and why (rationale)?

3. What methods did they use?

4. What were the most meaningful findings the authors reported?

5. What is one limitation to their study?

6. How do the findings from this study help you better understand the content from this week?

Part 2

Let’s start talking about proposal topics! I encourage you to consider a topic that you can envision as your dissertation.  It’s ok if you aren’t there yet but make sure to at least pick a topic you are interested in (it will make everything easier).  For Part 2 this week tell us what topic you are thinking of.  Remember proposals will be very specific so aim to get close to a level of specificity that’s workable (perhaps one that could lead to key terms to assist in the lit review).

At a minimum see if you can get it down to at least 2 variables (more is ok). For example, parenting styles and self-esteem.
