Summary:
The concept of neoliberalism stated in chapter 3 of the book was developed by the ideals
of the two 17th century classics liberals Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Both of them viewed
capitalism free market and free trade for individuals. “Neo” meant like a new type of liberalism
that involves politics and economy.
Neoliberalism is a term for an ideology that is based on political and economic free
market and absolute capitalism and the government can’t interfere in the privet sector business.
Complete Neoliberalism principles that are presented in the book are very straight forward; the
privatization of public enterprises, deregulation of the economy, liberalization of trade and
industry, massive tax cuts, strict control on organized labor, reduction of public expenditures,
and the downsizing of the government (Steger, 2013, p.41). The IMF and the World Bank chose
Argentina as the perfect model for using neoliberalism. Argentina celebrated low unemployment
rates and a stable currency compared to the dollar. As soon as Argentina felt that neoliberalism
was not needed the economy collapsed and they were broke.
In conclusion, neoliberalism promotes the idea of capitalism and the privet sector
controls the government. After reading the assigned chapter, I found that the concept of
neoliberalism interesting. If this concept gets applied in the real world, individuals will not suffer
from losing their business from excessive tax cuts, free trade, and internationalization of trade for
all individuals. Nevertheless, there are cons to neoliberalism. For example, one of the cons is
monopoly. Monopoly can affect the small private sector business. Inequality is also a very
known con, neoliberal polices tend to increase inequality.
