Drug addiction outline

INTRODUCTION

Attention Device Opener: Do you know anyone who is currently dealing with opioid addiction? Research shows that close to 35 million people are suffering from drug use disorders globally.

Central Idea: Fentanyl drugs have addictive components that once a person overuses them, can lead to behavior changes such as mood swings, being socially withdrawn, and engaging in risky behaviors.

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the increasing problem of prescription drug abuse. For instance, opioids/fentanyl is one of the drugs that is commonly abused by many people.

Thesis Statement: Today, I will inform you about the effects that opioids/fentanyl has on people. The misuse and addiction of fentanyl have increased significantly over the past few years. This has therefore become a major health concern and can lead to chronic constipation, drowsiness, and withdrawal symptoms in newborns.

BODY

This can lead to chronic constipation

The misuse of this drug activates cellular adaptations which in turn leads to constipation.

Opioid addiction further develops into chronic constipation whereby the victim has difficult bowel movements.

This can also be a sign of some serious problems such as brain issues.

Fentanyl addiction can cause drowsiness

Victims of fentanyl addiction experience excessive sleepiness and feel lethargic.

According to research, taking lower doses of fentanyl can lead to drowsiness while higher doses can lower the heart rate and cause breathing problems (Benyamin et al., 2018).

As a result, this can lead to death.

Withdrawal symptoms in newborns

Reports show that a lot of women are misusing fentanyl during pregnancy.

This causes addiction in the unborn babies, hence leading to withdrawal symptoms. In other words, opioid misuse can lead to neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Moreover, opioid misuse during pregnancy has been associated with stillbirths, birth defects, and poor fetal growth.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, fentanyl/opioid addiction is indeed a major health concern. This is because its long-term addiction can lead to chronic constipation, drowsiness, and withdrawal symptoms in newborns. Remember, any form of addiction is bad. So it is up to you and me to choose the right path to follow.

Integration of pertinent

Due Friday, December 2, 2022, 11:59 PM

Time remaining: 1 day 9 hours

Write a 5-7 page (single-spaced) paper describing your own views of relevant (in your opinion) theorists and concepts in plenty of detail and support from the vantage point of the end of the course.

My aim is for you to create your own theory of personality that you can use in your practice, research, and life. Please use the 5 Tools to help you with this assignment (e.g., Where do you stand on each tool? Do you have a mainstream worldview or are you unconventional in some areas?). The final paper will be more extensive than the initial position paper, requiring more detail and support. It will also include a comparison of your final and initial positions on the questions posed above, an integration of pertinent notes, and some explanation of the problems or weaknesses of your position.

Similar to the initial paper, the type of position you take will not be relevant to the evaluation of the paper. Grades are determined by the paper’s organization, clarity, quality of support, evidence of an awareness of relevant theory construction issues, completeness (e.g., whether you thoughtfully answered all the questions) and writing quality (e.g., spelling, grammar).

THE FIVE TOOLS

1. Time

2. Causation

3. Reasoning

4. Epistemology

5. Ontology

Challenging norms supportive of violence

For this discussion, you will begin by reading section 3, Challenging norms supportive of violence: examples of interventions, from the article https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/44147/9789241598330_eng.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y

. You will need to select ONE of the approaches reviewed in the article and then answer the Discussion Questions below:

  • social norms,
  • mass media interventions, or
  • banning corporal punishment to discuss.

You should provide an initial response by selecting ONE of the 3 approaches presented in the article discussing:

  1. the feasibility of implementing this type of approach for one type of violence (i.e. domestic violence, intimate partner violence, gun violence, etc.) covered in this lesson,
  2. a current example of such an approach, and
  3. how effective this approach has been.

Include the name of the approach you will be discussing in the title of your post. Your post should be a minimum of 250 words. If you refer to the article use appropriate in-text references and if you use any outside sources (you are not required to), make sure they are acceptable sources for this class (i.e. obtained through the University Libraries) and that you provide a reference for them. Do not quote any material from any sources for this assignment – everything should be in your own words.

Perspectives on the interaction of personality

Hopefully, the reading this week provided you with a variety of new perspectives in how you might look at many of the current events we hear about in the news (terrorist threats, cultural differences, acts of kindness and charity, acts of violence, etc.). Here is your opportunity to dive deeper into one of those events.

Your assignment: Write a 1-2 page paper reflecting on a current event in the media (an event that occurred sometime within the past months) demonstrating elements of this week’s reading. (Examples that easily come to mind include a story on cultural conflict or an example of two previously opposing groups working with one another.) Analyze the event based on concepts from your reading. How might a further understanding of the concepts from this week provide deeper insights into the Hot Topic? Excellent papers will fully meet the criteria below:

· Identify a specific “Hot Topic” describing the event, providing a citation/link to the news story inspiring the paper.

· Analyze the event through the various perspectives on the interaction of personality and culture; religion; love, etc.

· Provide perspective and insights to further understand the issues using psychological principles as the primary foundation of the analysis.

· Cite specific sources, research, concepts, etc. from the readings of Week Seven.

· Contain a well-developed introduction, body, and conclusion as the structure of the paper.

· Are grammatically and mechanically sound, as well as, free of spelling errors; apply content from the reading; cites sources using APA style.

As you craft this paper, please be sure to minimize any personal editorializing surrounding the issue. The goal of the assignment is to view the current event from the perspective of personality influences and their interactions with the various concepts from this week.

Treating psychological disorders

Now this is one area of psychology that contains a diversity of opinions, both learned and ‘personal’. So, here goes a few thoughts to get you thinking.

1. When do you believe medications are warranted for treating psychological disorders? [Distinguish your answer between children and adults.] Sadly, some who need medication for their disorders refuse to use them.

2. Until you read this chapter, what did you think of ‘mental illness’ compared to how you now understand it to be? Did your opinions change on this matter?

3. If you know someone with a mental illness and feel comfortable posting it, how is the person treated (or refuse to be treated) and how difficult has the person’s progress been over the years?

I kept these somewhat general so your answers can reflect diversity of opinions…While the DSM-5 is the current manual, there are still those who still use the DSM-IV-TR, this question is a fusion between both manuals.

Some points:

1. Agoraphobia is no longer linked to Panic Disorder

2. Go with my descriptions of Bipolar Disorder from my notes- after reviewing the DSM-5 and what has been noted in several texts, there is definitely some misinterpretation of what the manual is actually saying.

Influence of Life Scripts

In 2002, Boholst constructed a Life Position Scale for the purpose of finishing his dissertation. The construct life position was one of the variables he studied in his doctoral dissertation titled, The Influence of Life Scripts and Life Positions on Psychopathology and Positive Mental Health: A Structural Equation Modeling. He had to construct this scale because there was no available one at the time. In 2005, he and two other authors wrote another article that found modest correlations between Life Positions and Attachment Styles—validating the scale by establishing the relationship between life positions and a variable that was theoretically argued to have conceptual parallels or to be “similar” with it. In 2012, Isgor and two other authors translated the Life Position Scale into Turkish and established its reliability and validity.

This is often a realistic scenario where a tool slowly attains credibility by a gradual validation process across the years—often by different authors. For example, in 2004, Weisner wrote his doctoral dissertation in the University of North Texas on the relationship between Affective Traits and Life Positions. Hadzi-Pesic and others more recently (2014) validated the Life Position Scale and found correlations with alcohol addicts’ personality.

Discuss the different types of validity that have been employed—whether implicitly or explicitly to validate the life position scale. It is ideal therefore to read articles in chronological order starting with the A Life Position Scale, Life Positions and Attachment: A Canonical Correlation Analysis, and Life Positions Scale Language Equivalence, Reliability and Validity Analysis.

Length: 7-10 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

Scale Construction Proposal

For this task, imagine that you were asked to give a scale construction proposal to a group of hypothetical PhD students. The PowerPoint presentation should include the definition of the construct that you intend to make a scale on, the existing tools measuring it, and other related studies. Also include your justification and rationale for your construction. More importantly, discuss how you will construct the items and the item response scales, how you will analyze the items’ reliabilities, and establish the scale’s validity.

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as speaker notes for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.

Support your presentation with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: 12-15 slides (with a separate reference slide)
Notes Length: 200-350 words for each slide

Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA

DSM-5-TR Summaries Assignment Instructions

Overview

Throughout your career as a counselor, you will be required to assess and diagnose clients. To engage in this practice in a competent manner, you will need to have a good working knowledge of the DSM-5-TR including the general categories and the specific disorders that are contained in each category. This DSM-5-TR Summaries Assignment will introduce you to the more common categories that you will encounter as a counselor.

Instructions

You will have four sets of summaries to complete, each due during a different Module/Week. Each set will contain a 1-page summary of each of the following categories of disorders:

Summary Set 1, DSM-5-TR Summaries: Initial Assignment (total of 3 summaries; 1 page per category=3 pages of content):

· Bipolar and Related Disorders

· Depressive Disorders

· Anxiety Disorders

Summary Set 2, DSM-5-TR Summaries: Second Assignment (total of 3 summaries; 1 page per category=3 pages of content):

· Substance-related and Addictive Disorders

· Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders

· Obsessive-compulsive and Related Disorders

Summary Set 3, DSM-5-TR Summaries: Third Assignment (choose 3 categories from this list; 1 page per category=3 pages of content):

· Personality Disorders

· Somatic Symptoms

· Neurodevelopmental

· Schizophrenia Spectrum

Summary Set 4, DSM-5-TR Summaries: Fourth Assignment (choose 3 categories from this list; 1 page per category=3 pages of content):

· Neurocognitive

· Disruptive, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders

· Feeding and Eating Disorders

· Sexual

· Sleep/Wake

· Elimination

· Gender

· Other Conditions That May Be a Focus of Clinical Attention

You will write a one-page summary for EACH category. Summaries must include:

Overview – a brief overview of the general category. In one or two sentences, identify the characteristic(s) that all the disorders in the category share. (Example: in the Depressive disorders, all the disorders are characterized by feelings of sadness.)

Disorders – For each disorder in the category, write one or two sentences that provide a brief description of the disorder. In the Overview, you noticed what is similar across the disorders in the category; in the Disorders section, you will identify the main feature of each disorder that distinguishes it from the rest of the category (e.g., time frames, severity, types of symptoms, etc.)

Risk and Prognostic Factors – Choose one disorder from each category and provide a brief summary of the risk and prognostic factors as found in the DSM-5-TR.

You will organize each summary by using the current edition of APA headings. Start each summary with the category title using a Level 1 APA heading. OverviewDisorders and Risk and Prognostic Factors should be Level 2 headings.

You will include an APA title page and reference page. An abstract is not needed. Remember, the graduate program at Liberty uses the guidelines for “Professional” papers, not the “Student” version.

As this is primarily a summary of the DSM, you may start your DSM-5-TR Summaries Assignment paper with the statement “All of the following information was taken from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition, Text Revision (American Psychiatric Association, 2022) unless otherwise noted.” When including this statement, you do not need to use in-text citations for the DSM-5-TR. Using other sources is not recommended; however, if you use additional sources, you will need to cite and reference them.

This DSM-5-TR Summaries Assignment must be a paraphrase of the information you find in the DSM-5-TR or your textbook. You may not use any quotations.

Be sure to review the DSM-5-TR Summaries Grading Rubric before beginning this DSM-5-TR Summaries Assignment.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Exhibiting Disruptive Behaviors

You are a school social worker who has been assigned to work with a 12-year-old boy recently placed into your school.  He is exhibiting disruptive behaviors in the classroom and appears depressed and disengaged with his peers.  You learn he just came from Haiti with his family to start a new life in the United States.  The student also disclosed that he feels overwhelmed by his new home and school environment while being one of only a few minority individuals in both settings.  During a school conference, you openly discuss the issues with the boy’s family and his Father indicated that in response to his son’s troubles, he exercises corporal punishment on him, grounds him, and does not allow him to participate in any activities in the community.  His Father is refusing to accept counseling services for his son or any outside support.  The student actually tells you he is not allowed to associate with others in the community, even when he is not being punished, as he works with his father which is causing him to feel upset, depressed and wishing he could return to Haiti where he had friends, more freedom and felt happier.  Given the cultural aspects here, how do you handle working with this family?  What impact does race, culture and ethnicity have on this boy and his family?  What supports would you suggest for the family?

Justice and Implications

The Criminal Justice and Implications for Human Services

Choose one of the following questions to discuss. You should not discuss both questions, but should respond to peers for both.

Legalizing marijuana is a controversial topic in human services, criminal justice, political arenas, and health arenas. From a human service policy perspective, analyze what you believe would be the positive and/or negative consequences of legalizing marijuana. Discuss the implications for human services providers. If you agree or disagree with the stance of your peers, then explain specifically why and provide substantial evidence in your peer responses.

OR

Sexually violent predators are among the most feared and the most ridiculed individuals in our society. Some states have enacted legislation to allow civil commitment of sexually violent predators once they have been released from prison. Discuss the pros and cons of this legislation. Include in your discussion the implications for human services providers.
